According to TikTok, this is the hairdresser's secret against greasy hair

washing hair with dreft

Shampoo, one more time shampoo, a hair mask and as a cherry on top some conditioner on the ends. There, my hair can last a few more days. At least, that's what I always assume. But it often doesn't help. That same evening I can already feel the greasiness bubbling up between my parting. It happens to the best of us, but it is indeed annoying. Fortunately, let there be a hairdresser's secret that you have lying around without any doubt — in the kitchen cabinet under the sink. I'm talking about a bottle of green Dreft.

Where on earth did I get this tip from, you might wonder? From TikTok of course. TikToker Nienke mentioned in her video that with just a few drops of Dreft she hardly has any issues with greasy hair anymore. How she uses it is by mixing it into her shampoo. Then massage it into the hair (make sure to get those roots since that's where the greasiness comes from) and rinse it out. To ensure that no excess dish soap remains in your hair, she recommends going through it with shampoo one more time. Treat your hair with some extra conditioner and you can easily go days with it, they say.

In the comments, I honestly expected a lot of criticism (because: Dreft in your hair?!), but that was far from the case. ‘I had to secretly use this during my hairdressing training from my teacher on a woman with very dirty hair’ and ‘honestly got this tip from my hairdresser’. In other words: I take back my words.

The science behind this miracle product is actually quite simple. Greasy hair occurs due to your own sebum production. Sebum is a natural substance in your body that your skin and hair need to be protected. It does this by keeping your skin hydrated and maintaining a healthy pH level. Dreft ensures that this pH level remains balanced because it is so acidic. A greasy scalp is basic and actually lacks acidity. Your bottle of green dish soap essentially replenishes that acidity.

Should you really do this often? Not really, of course. Dreft is powerful stuff and you don't want to throw it in your hair too often. According to several people in the comments (including hairdressers), a few times a month is more than enough to prevent greasy roots. However, it's not a bad idea to follow up with a nourishing mask to ensure you don't dry your hair out too much.

That years of training your hair to keep it fresh for as long as possible can be given up now. A bottle of Dreft has been the solution all along. Should have said that earlier.
