Netflix tip of the Day: Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street

Docuseries Madoff

Documentary lovers, there's another hit for you on Netflix. And you can enjoy it for a while, because this docuseries consists of four episodes. Don't let the name fool you (I did), because this has nothing to do with The Wolf of Wall Street, aka Jordan Belfort.

The Monster of Wall Street is about Bernie Madoff, who died at the age of 82 in prison, where he was serving a 150-year sentence. But why? This man was the founder of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities and took Wall Street by storm starting in 1960. Or better said: he completely drained Wall Street.

This Bernie Madoff had set up a gigantic Ponzi scheme: he defrauded his investors of about 65 billion dollars. No, that's not a typo. Because of this astronomical amount, he is the world's biggest fraudster ever, although he will never be able to do anything with that money again.

The docu takes us back to the beginning of his company, how he grew up in the Queens neighborhood of New York, and even the prison is extensively covered. They talk about the peak of his ‘career’, how he reached the top of the NASDAQ, and of course: how he was ultimately convicted for this Ponzi scheme, which is a type of pyramid scheme. Highly recommended again, this one.
