Why you experience more hair loss in the fall

Is your hairbrush suddenly full again after brushing your locks and does it seem like your hair has halved when you put it up? in your hairpin? That could be right. It's autumn and that means only one thing: hair loss. While animals get a thicker coat as the temperature drops, we lose ours. On average, we lose about a hundred hairs a day. This sounds like a lot, but it's actually quite normal: it belongs to a normal hair cycle. As soon as the temperature drops, this amount is just a bit higher, and generally, you don't need to worry about it, but I'll explain how that works.
Growth and shedding phase
Your hair goes through different phases, with summer having a particularly positive effect on the first: the growth phase. You may have noticed that your hair grows faster in the summer; in fact, about 90 percent of your hair is in this growth phase and only 10 percent in the shedding phase. This varies by season, as the shedding percentage is higher in autumn. This could be due to hormonal changes, especially since our testosterone levels are at their highest in autumn, which could cause more hair loss, but unfortunately, that is not entirely clear (yet). This also applies to our eyelashes and eyebrows: their growth and shedding phases are just a bit shorter, about 6 to 8 weeks. So if your eyelashes suddenly seem a lot less full, now you know what it could be due to.
The fact that it could have to do with hormones doesn't surprise me at all, because after my pregnancy and breastfeeding, I also experienced the well-known hair loss. Many other mothers had already warned me about this, but once it happens, it's always confronting, because you feel like you have no hair left. If you really notice that this continues months later and you even start to get bald spots, it's wise to go to the doctor and have it checked. Not only after a pregnancy but also after seasonal changes.
What can you do about it?
By eating healthy and varied, taking additional vitamins like biotin (get advice from a specialist for this), not using too many products like dry shampoos that can irritate your scalp, and avoiding hot styling tools, you can possibly limit it. Paying extra attention to your scalp is also quite important with the suitable products for this (these are not shampoos). Protecting your new hair follicles can also have a positive effect in the long term (read more about it here). And lastly: relax. Don't worry too much if you suddenly have more hair loss than the week before; stress doesn't do much good for your locks. So schedule that massage and ensure that hormonal balance, then you'll see that your hairbrush is a bit less full.
