Netflix tip of the day: Liebes Kind

Netflix tip of the day: Liebes Kind

Very stupid, but I can limit myself so much in choosing new series and movies. Often when they are spoken in a language other than Dutch or English... I lose interest. Because of this, I have often cut myself in the fingers, as I only started scandalously late with Squid Game because I thought I wouldn't be able to keep my attention on it since I don't speak Korean. Such a stupid thought, of course, because it turned out to be one of the best series in years.

So it was with this German series Liebes Kind. My German is significantly better than my Korean, but to be honest: I find it such an ugly language that I didn't click on the series. Until I was incredibly bored last night, had exhausted all streaming services, and then ended up watching it anyway. And I can tell you: the best decision of the month. This series is so thrilling.

Liebes Kind is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Romy Hausmann, and is a miniseries of six episodes. The series revolves around Jasmin Grass, who is kidnapped in a parking garage. She is then locked in a small apartment without windows, in the middle of a forest in Germany. Her kidnapper dyes her hair blonde and constantly calls her ‘Lena’ and instructs her to take care of ‘their’ children. Lena manages to escape (after five months), but nothing is as it seems: it won't be that easy to get rid of her kidnapper. I won't give any spoilers, but there are so many twists and turns in this series that it's impossible not to become addicted to it, because you always want to know how it really is. And yes: it is genuinely incredibly thrilling.

Facebook and Twitter think so too, where there is often talk about Liebes Kind and where people ‘complain’ about sleepless nights. So you have to enjoy some suspense (and be able to handle it, otherwise you might want to watch it during the day), but then this series is right up your alley.

‘Liebes Kind keeps me on the edge of my seat continuously, phew.’

‘How Liebes Kind manages to keep you hooked from episode one. Terrifyingly good.’

‘True crime, psychological thriller, a murder mystery in one. Jozef Fritzl meets Room meets Gone Girl. Really a must-see.’

That's a selection from the Twitter messages, in case you're not convinced yet. Let those nightmares come.
