Are we being scammed by the self-checkout machines?

Say wine, snacks or haute cuisine and the food lovers of online food magazine FavorFlav know where to drink, how to eat and what to cook. This time: the self-scan checkouts at Albert Heijn are not to be trusted.

Overall, I really find the arrival of self-scan checkouts a blessing. Because I can be quite dreamy, sometimes I can have a rustige bitchface (when I'm not focused: always) and therefore I can have as little contact with other people as possible. Of course, I know the risk: you can be checked. I have no problem with that. Until recently, by the way.

When I had two bottles of wine with my groceries and the incredibly grumpy Albert Heijn employee asked me for my ID. Me, the 33-year-old. Well, I didn't have it with me (not required over your 26th), I didn't get my bottle of wine, I was grumpy, she was already that – it was an annoying moment. I am clearly not the only one who can get upset about certain events at Albert Heijn.

Hey, Albert Heijn, how do you think it's going?
Martijn is complaining on TikTok and I must say: I completely understand his frustration. It's a somewhat long TikTok, I would recommend watching and/or listening to it all the way through, but I'm not the hardest to please: I'll explain what the problem is.

This Martijn is a loyal customer at Albert Heijn and even has a (premium) personalized Bonus card. Like many of us, by the way. Super handy, right? You get discounts on products that are personally selected for you. Win-win, it seems to me. Well, not so: that self-scan checkout does not take that personal bonus discount and Albert Heijn is simply aware of this! However, they decide to do nothing about it and shift the problem onto us; the only way to still get that discount is to request the difference back at the service desk.

No Albert Heijn, that's not going well
But seriously: how many people actually go to that service desk and how many think: oh, I'll just let that twenty cents go? I dare to bet big money that that last group is much, much larger. And so Albert Heijn gets lucky again: we buy products without discounts. This happened to Martijn when he happened to pay attention to it once. How many times has it happened that the bonus is not taken and you don't notice it? Haaaallo Albert Heijn, can you fix this?!
