The Christmas survival guide for the introvert

By
introvert Christmas

They always called me a sensitive child. Not that it was seen as something bad, but sensitive, that I certainly was. Especially during busy moments like Christmas or birthdays, I sometimes really didn't know where to look to find some much-needed peace. Now, many years later, I know exactly what to do to keep Christmas a bit calm. I call it: the Christmas survival guide for the introvert, and I'm sure everyone (yes, even you, mega extroverted reader) can benefit from these tips.

Plan me-time moments
Consciously reserve some time for yourself during the busy Christmas period. Whether it's a quiet walk, a good book, or just relaxing in your own space, make sure you have moments to recharge. Everyone who loves you will never hold this against you, especially if you communicate it well.

Set clear boundaries
Don't be afraid to set clear boundaries when it comes to social events. Selectively choose which invitations you accept and don't be afraid to say no if you need some peace. Again: if you explain this, no one will find it strange. Communication is key.

Opt for small gatherings
Instead of large, noisy gatherings, choose more intimate parties with a smaller group of people. This creates a more relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy more easily, and you also have time to talk to everyone equally. Much cozier!

Self-care
Consciously take time for self-care. Whether it's a warm bath, listening to soothing music, or practicing a quick (or long) meditation or breathing exercise (my fave, you know that by now), make sure to schedule your self-care moments.

Escape with a good book or movie
Plan a quiet evening where you can lose yourself in a good book or your favorite movie. This offers relaxation and a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle. And let's be honest: everyone is probably way too busy with difficult extroverted things to notice that you've slipped away for a moment.

Be kind to yourself
Remind yourself that it's okay to withdraw and that you don't have to attend every event. Listen to your own needs and be kind to yourself during this busy period. No one benefits if you decide to cancel something and then feel guilty about it all evening.

Enjoy the little moments
Remember that the holidays are supposed to be fun and cozy, and you get to decide how to fill them. Focus this Christmas on the small, meaningful moments and enjoy being together with your friends and family. In the end, that's the only thing that really matters.
