‘These tourist traps are more than worth visiting’

By

Tourist traps have an enormous negative connotation, while that is not always justified. For example, if you go to New York, you know that Times Square is going to be incredibly busy and you will come away completely overstimulated, but are you going to skip it because of that? It is part of New York, and it is also part of it being so touristy, but your visit to The Big Apple is not complete without it.

More people think this way and that is why travelers on Reddit share their tips regarding tourist traps: these destinations or attractions may not have the best reputation, but they are definitely worth visiting.

1. ‘Machu Picchu was this for me. If you don’t feel like doing the full hike, you can take the bus to the entrance. It feels almost like Disneyland, but it is one of those places that do not come into their own in photos, you really have to see this with your own eyes.’

2. ‘The Grand Canyon. The crowds are bizarre, especially on weekends and during holidays, but you will be amazed at how little of that crowd remains when you walk a bit further down the path. The northern part is also beautiful and a lot less busy, but it is quite a distance away.’

3. ‘Hop-on, hop-off buses in big cities. Super touristy, but a very good way to get to know the whole city. You get a good idea of how the city is structured and can then decide where you want to return to.’

4. ‘The pyramids in Egypt. Mega touristy, that is beyond doubt, but also one of the most breathtaking things I have ever seen.’

5. ‘Vatican City is very touristy, but also a must-visit (including the museums). Actually, all attractions in Rome are very touristy, but you just have to see them.’

6. ‘Bruges in Belgium. Not undiscovered at all and it is teeming with tourists, but it still feels like a fairy tale.’

7. ‘The Niagara Falls, especially the Canadian side. The views are much prettier from there, but that boulevard is really a nightmare.’

8. ‘The Blue Lagoon in Iceland. Yes, there are cheaper hot springs that are also less crowded. I have been to several, but this is the only one I would go back to 100 percent. It is magical there.’
