This is why men get so excited when they have a hangover

Extremely inconvenient: did you go swimming in a vat of beer yesterday, and now your head is splitting from the hangover. That is of course a logical consequence, but a hangover can also have other symptoms besides physical discomfort. For example, you can become extremely emotional, but your libido can also suddenly skyrocket. That has been known for a while, but research has now shown exactly why that is — and specifically for men, because it works quite differently for them than for women.

Why are men so horny when they are hungover? There are three explanations for this.

1. They have no control over their penis
This genuinely comes from research conducted by the Kinsey Institute and the University of Washington. In a study, they asked both drunk and sober men to suppress their erection while watching porn. Result: the drunk group clearly had more trouble with this. Getting aroused when it shouldn't happen, and that can still be the case on a hungover Sunday morning, because that alcohol is still in your blood. It is then less easy to suppress.

2. Nothing but sex on the mind
Drunk people are not the best multitaskers; they can often focus on one thing, and if that thing is sex, nothing else matters. And because that alcohol is still significantly in your bloodstream the next day, it can very well be that sex is still the only thing you can think about and what has your full attention. Result: a very horny, but oh so hungover morning.

3. Out of sheer desperation
Hangovers just hurt, let's be honest. That head that just won't stop pounding, and if things go wrong, that nausea but still the insatiable urge for a Big Mac… A hangover can be quite a rollercoaster. Very simply: sex distracts from that pain and it probably won't make your headache worse, but even less bad. You might not be able to keep that ibuprofen down, but you can feel quite better from sex.
