Why Ameland is the perfect summer vacation destination

By
Ameland

The summer holiday has really started for most people now, so I hear everyone around me talking about tropical destinations, charming undiscovered Mediterranean villages, or trips to Paris to attend the Olympic Games. This year, I just didn't know what I felt like, and then it's a lovely idea that I can always fall back on what is so familiar to me Vlieland. The Wadden Islands are actually the best base for anyone who wants to get away this summer, but doesn't have the time to fly to the other side of the world, or simply doesn't want to fly at all this year. How nice is it that there are several Dutch Wadden Islands to discover? This time I went on a quest to find out what there is to experience on Ameland, the fourth island in the row.

The boat to Ameland departs from Friesland, from the village of Holwerd (the Frisians actually write it as ‘Holwert’). It is wise to book your boat tickets in advance, especially if you plan to take your own car to the island. The departures fill up quickly, so it would be a shame if you (literally) miss the boat. Once you arrive, there is plenty to do on the island. Fortunately, there are also enough hotels (but of course, you need to reserve those as well). If you need the village feel of the island, Nobel Hotel is recommended. If you prefer a newer and more luxurious feel, then the new Boutique Hotel Faan is really something for you. For those who want to step out of bed directly with their feet in the sand, they should treat themselves to a stay at Strandhotel Buren aan Zee as a gift.

You don't have to be afraid of getting bored if the summer weather doesn't cooperate. For example, you can visit the Nobels Nostalgic Museum, which doesn't necessarily only relate to Ameland. Islander Tjeerd has a collection of the most beautiful antique cars, interiors, and fashion. Of course, there are also museums where the island itself is completely central; there are so many that a separate list has been made.

My favorite activities on the Wadden Islands are actually very simple: visiting the lighthouse, horseback riding, and enjoying drinks. It seems like every Wadden Island has its own brewery, and that's good news if you love trying new things. So definitely stop by the Amelander Brewery. They also organize fun events that all relate to beer. As far as I'm concerned, that sounds pretty good. And don't forget to enjoy walking and the silence in nature on such an island. The chance is quite high that there are enough walking routes where you won't encounter anyone at all. Quite nice if you want to feel like you're really away from the ordinary, inhabited world.
