Is a first date in an amusement park a good idea? On paper maybe, in practice a little less so. Still, we went for it; with our shared love for adventure and fresh nerves in our pockets, we met at the entrance.

Full of adrenaline, I pulled my date to the first roller coaster I saw, but I quickly noticed that something was not quite right. He was getting paler but insisted that nothing was wrong. I chose to believe him, but soon realized that this was not true, as I had never seen anyone experience such terror as at the moment the roller coaster plunged down at high speed. Wobbling and pale as a ghost, he exited the ride and then couldn't get another bite down his throat.

Maybe he had pretended to be a bit tougher than he was, but I found it very strange that the adventurous, spontaneous guy I had met through a dating app was nowhere to be found. Anyway, you don't leave a date in an amusement park after an hour, so I decided to make the best of it. My date thought the same. To improve the atmosphere, he suggested we try the Ferris wheel. Unfortunately, it turned out he had a fear of heights, which led to a sort of panicky emo reaction. I tried to reassure him, but the date had now officially become a roller coaster of emotions.

Once both feet were back on the ground, my head also returned from the clouds and I decided to end the afternoon. I know it might be a bit unfair, but I was just really turned off. Ultimately, the date ended with an awkward goodbye hug and a promise to see each other again, although we both knew deep down that the amusement park adventure had been a one-time thing. From now on, I’ll just play it safe and meet in a café. It’s already exciting enough.
