Last night, the annual Emmy Awards were presented. The awards for the best TV series. ‘Shōgun’, ‘The Bear’, and ‘Baby Reindeer’ can call themselves the big winners. It was an evening full of first-time moments, and we will go through the most remarkable ones with you.

Dutch success

‘The Traitors US’ managed to win the award for best reality program last night. The show is the American version of ‘De Verraders’ and originally comes from the Netherlands. The program was created by television director and producer Marc Pos and has now been sold to twenty countries worldwide.

The big winner

‘Shōgun’ is the big winner of the evening with 19 awards. The series tells the story of British sailor John Blackthorne who ends up in Japan and is trained there to become a samurai. ‘Best Drama Series’ is one of the awards the show received. This makes it the first non-English show ever to win this category.

Oscar slap resonates

Will Smith was able to accept an Emmy. However, it was not the actor, but the screenwriter with the exact same name. He received the award for the drama series ‘Slow Horses’. Smith made a reference to his namesake who slapped comedian Chris Rock during the Oscars in 2022. “Relax, despite my name I come in peace,” the screenwriter began his speech.

Father and son

The presentation of this 76th edition was in the hands of actors Eugene (77) and Dan Levy (41). With this duo, it is the first time that the Emmys are presented by a father and son. Both Levys have also won the award before, even at the same time and for the same series, Schitt's Creek.

Finally!

Actress Jodie Foster already had an Oscar, Golden Globe, and Bafta to her name, but an Emmy was still missing. Until last night. Foster won in the category ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie’, a series in which each episode or season tells a completely different and standalone story. She received the award for her role in “True Detective: Night Country.”.

Win with a message

Netflix series ‘Baby Reindeer’ took home 6 awards. Creator and lead actor Richard Gadd won for best actor and best script in a ‘Limited or Anthology Series’. In his speech, Gadd urged everyone to always follow their dreams and keep going. “No matter how bad it gets, it always gets better. Keep going and I promise you things will be okay.”

Olympic touch

This award show also received, like the VMAs, an Olympic touch. Athletes Stephen Nedoroscik, Ilona Maher, and Caeleb Dressel, along with actors Jane Lynch and Brendan Hunt, presented the award for best director of a drama series. Lynch and Hunt both once played a sports coach and briefly returned to that role.

Politics is everywhere

Although the evening was mainly focused on series, politics also came up briefly. Actress Candice Bergen took a jab at JD Vance, Donald Trump's vice-presidential candidate. Vance previously referred to young women as ‘childless cat ladies’. Bergen criticized the statement by referring to an incident she had years ago with then-vice president Dan Quayle. The actress ended her statement with the shout: meow.

First time win

Actress Liza Colón-Zayas won the award for best supporting actress in a comedy series for her role in ‘The Bear’. It was the first Emmy for the actress and the first time a Latina wins in this category. Colón-Zayas dedicated her award to all Latinas and urged them to believe in themselves and, above all, to vote.
