Under the spell of Dead to Me?

The creators have a new Netflix hit

By

Home is where the… secrets are; at least, in the new Netflix series ‘No Good Deed’. In this dark comedy, we follow Lydia and Paul as they try to sell their house (full of secrets, of course). The brain behind the series is Liz Feldman; she previously created ‘Dead to Me’ and that was quite a favorite. So we can expect another hefty dose of humor with a dark edge—and we can almost start enjoying that.

Better lost than rich

When Lydia's (Lisa Kudrow) and Paul's (Ray Romano) children move out, the couple decides to sell their villa in the popular Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. The house turns out to be in demand, with three totally different families vying to buy it. Of course, it's nice to have all those potential buyers, but it also means a lot of people wanting to know everything about the villa; something Lydia and Paul would rather avoid. It may seem like a dream house, but for them, it has become more of a nightmare. They struggle to hide all the dark secrets; and there are plenty of those. There seems to be only one way to escape their past: to dive right back into it.

Inspiration from ‘Dead to Me’

Showrunner Liz Feldman has long wanted to create something about real estate in Los Angeles. A large part of her inspiration came from her earlier success ‘Dead to Me’. That is also exactly why we will see a familiar face return: Linda Cardellini, also known as Judy. “Part of my inspiration was Linda. She was like, ‘The next role I play, I want her to be the opposite of Judy.’ And I thought, ‘What would that look like?”” Thus, the character Margo was born, a cunning and ambitious real estate agent who will do anything to get her hands on the house and, like all the characters, has her own motives and secrets.

‘No Good Deed’ will be available on Netflix from December 12. Eight episodes in total, fortunately all online at once. Until then, the trailer at least gives us enough to speculate about. What has happened in that house?
