Music really does have an impact on your friendships

You feel down so you put on a sad song, or maybe something really cheerful and you search for happy tracks to listen to while dancing through the streets. I always notice that music has a strong influence on my mood. Like when your relationship ends, and at some point you trade Ariana Grande’s umpteenth break-up album for Sabrina Carpenter. It helps you in some way to get a boost, such an empowering song that makes you think: ‘not today, jerk’. Music plays a big role in the lives of many people; just think about how many memories can be attached to a song. I remember so well that my best friend and I went to a concert together for the first time! It was Di-Rect, they played in Paradiso in Amsterdam and we were of course in love with those guys. Now play a random track from that CD, and I’ll sing along.
Music therefore not only influences your emotions
That music has a lot of influence on your emotions and carries memories with it is not such a big surprise. What I do find very special is that music can even influence your friendships. In what way? Well, the situation I described above is already an example of this. By listening to music together, or both being fans of a certain band, you can build a connection with someone. At concerts, you are basically in a room full of like-minded people when it comes to music. This enhances the sense of togetherness and provides a good basis for making connections with new people. In this way, new friendships arise. But existing friendships can also gain more depth in such a situation: you create memories together that you will never forget for the rest of your life. The bond you already had is only strengthened in this way.
If you don't know what to say anymore: start that playlist
Music can also be a way to express your feelings. So for those who find it difficult to tell how they feel, it might be a nice solution to choose a few songs that describe what you are going through. For example, you can tell a good friend what’s going on without having to find the words yourself. The fact that you both love the same music already provides a good basis for a friendship, and the emotion and memories that music carries will have a positive influence on your friendship. It makes me feel so nostalgic!
