My Old Ass: this special title is the hit of Prime Video

By

When I saw the movie ‘My Old Ass’, I didn't immediately think: I have to see that. But due to all the positive reactions on social media, I started to doubt. Maybe the title just puts you on the wrong foot? Well, that certainly turned out to be the case. This film not only has a hefty dose of humor, but it also carries a beautiful message.

Advice to your younger self

18-year-old Elliott (Maisy Stella) is about to start studying in the big city, far away from her parents' cranberry farm. In the last weeks of summer vacation, she tries to spend as much time as possible with her friends. During a camping trip, the girls take mushrooms, which lead to intense hallucinations. Completely under the influence of drugs, Elliott comes face to face with her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza). This older version has one urgent piece of advice: avoid boys named Chad. Elliott is left with many questions, but fortunately, her future self has left a phone number. Thanks to endless phone calls and well-meaning advice, the teenager starts to look at her life differently.

Live in the now

Elliott can't wait for her life to ‘really’ begin. She wants to get away from the too-small island and her annoying family. Only then will everything become more fun and interesting. But in her desire for the future, she forgets to enjoy the now. And that's exactly what her adult self is trying to teach her and what the creators want to convey to you as a viewer. Many things in life suddenly pass by, without you really noticing it. Who still remembers the last time you went outside to play? By sometimes pausing to appreciate what you have and being truly present in the now, you value all those little things much more.

A clear goal

If you had the chance to give advice to your younger self, what would it be? That was one of the questions director Megan Park asked herself while coming up with the story. After her intense directorial debut with ‘The Fallout’, about the aftermath of a school shooting, Megan had a clear goal for her next project. “I wanted to make a film that left people feeling more cheerful and nostalgic. So many heavy things happen in the world. I wanted to bring people back to the summers of their youth.” She made the film together with Margot Robbie's production company. This turns out to be such a golden combination that new collaborations are already in the works. To be continued.

‘My Old Ass’ is now available on Prime Video.
