The comeback of the Hawaiian shirt

By

The Hawaiian shirt has undergone a remarkable transformation. Initially, it was a shirt with a dated image, worn by American presidents when they had a weekend off. Elvis Presley wore a Hawaiian shirt in the sappy film Blue Hawaii from 1961.

But then suddenly gangsters and tough guys started wearing it. Al Pacino wears several Hawaiian shirts as Tony Montana in Scarface, sometimes covered in blood, which also happens to the Hawaiian shirt of Brad Pitt (as Tyler Durden) in Fight Club.

That same Brad Pitt plays a stuntman in Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, and in that film, he wears a yellow Hawaiian shirt over a white Champions T-shirt. It looks at least as cheerful as Johnny Depp in his role as Hunter Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, or as Nicolas Cage in Raising Arizona.

What is a camp collar?
The camp collar, also known as a Cuban collar, is a collar that is worn open and spread out and is mainly found on short-sleeved shirts with a boxy fit (so without tailoring), such as Hawaiian shirts and bowling shirts.

Fun fact: in Hawaii itself, they use the term Aloha shirt instead of Hawaiian shirt.
