These are the most striking moments of the VMAs

By

MTV held the annual Video Music Awards (VMAs) last night. An evening full of winners and performances. Artists like Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter received a ‘moonman’, as the awards are also called. We go through the most remarkable moments of the show with you.

An ode to Britney

Rapper Megan Thee Stallion was one of the hosts this year. During the show, she paid tribute to Britney Spears. Thee Stallion appeared in the iconic ‘Slave 4 U’ outfit that Spears wore during the VMAs in 2001. The most striking aspect of the look is definitely the large python around the singers' necks. Thee Stallion could hardly wait for the snake to be gone.

Extraterrestrial romance

Singer Sabrina Carpenter was one of the artists who performed this year. For her performance, Carpenter chose a fitting extraterrestrial theme, entirely in line with the ‘moonman’ statues that are awarded. With astronauts and aliens, the singer danced across the stage. With one alien, Carpenter got particularly cozy.

To great heights

Katy Perry also performed this year during the awards show. The singer began her performance at great heights and descended from the ceiling. Perry delivered a medley of several of her hits. ‘ET’, ‘Roar’, and ‘I Kissed A Girl’ were among them. After her performance, the singer received the Video Vanguard award. An award for all her achievements and contributions to music in her career.

Queen of VMA

If we have to point out one artist as the big winner, it has to be Taylor Swift. The singer took home 7 statues this year. In total, she now has 30 VMA awards in her possession. This makes Swift the most successful artist at the VMAs ever. That record was previously held by Beyoncé. She also has 30 awards, but not all of them are solo achievements. Swift also thanked her boyfriend Travis Kelce in her speech and urged everyone to vote in the upcoming presidential elections.

In a new jacket

Singer Lenny Kravitz delivered a three-part medley. One of the songs was a collaboration with rapper Quavo. The two artists sang the song ‘Fly’. A reference to ‘Fly Away’, the 1988 hit by Kravitz. The new song contains a sample from the original. Kravitz won his second VMA ever and dedicated the award to his mother.

Finally the medal

Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles was one of the guests during the VMAs. The gymnast received a bronze stopwatch from musician Flavor Flav during the show. The gift was a reference to the bronze medal that Chiles narrowly missed during the Paris Olympics due to a scoring error. This way, she still has her bronze prize.

An acrobatic debut

22-year-old singer Benson Boone made his debut at the VMAs. Boone was allowed to perform and pulled out all his tricks, literally. The singer flew over the stage with a somersault and surprised many fellow artists.

Back in time

Chappell Roan received the award for best new artist. The singer also got to perform during her first VMAs. For that, she took the audience back in time. Dressed in a full knight costume and armed with a sword, the singer performed her song ‘Good Luck, Babe’.
