Here's how to choose the perfect color for your wall (and ceiling!)

Although you would think that after waiting three years, you would really know which colors you want where in your new home: think again. At least, when it comes to my current decisions, decisions… We still have a little while before the painter and sprayer get to work, but man, what stress all those beautiful color options for the walls can bring. Does it sound familiar to you? Or are you just in the mood for a new color at home? For the decisive round, I dove a little deeper into the options. Because how do you actually choose the perfect color for your wall? There is of course much more to it than that one color sample that you thought looked so nice at the hardware store. Below I give you a few tips:
Do you want to create more or less space optically in a room? Does your room lack warmth or do you actually need extra light, for example through a small window? Then here are a few nice tips to keep in mind:
From small to spacious
Is your room on the small side? Then go for light shades. Light shades create an optical illusion of more space. Do you have a low ceiling? Then give it a color that is one or two shades lighter than the color on the wall. You will see that this immediately gives a super expanding effect.
From large to cozy
Do you have a large room or a high ceiling? Then choose deep, dark colors. You can also choose to make your ceiling a little darker than the shade on the walls, which gives an extra warm and cozy atmosphere.
From sleek to atmospheric
Every color has its own atmosphere. For example, red is a very energetic and passionate shade, while blue and green create a calm and relaxed vibe. Do you know what atmosphere you want?
Take your ceiling
Don't stop at the walls. By extending the wall color onto the ceiling, or choosing a shade lighter, a calm and super stylish whole is created. Especially in rooms with high ceilings and cool light, a color on the ceiling (that is different from that on the walls) can make the whole cozy. When you paint the ceiling the same color as the walls, other than white, it can look extra calm. This works well in a bathroom or toilet. In larger spaces, this is not necessarily recommended due to the ‘box effect’ you get because there is no depth in the space.
Light incidence
Have you already decided which color it should be, but are you unsure about the shade? By trying out different color testers on the wall, you can be sure how the colors react to the light incidence in your home. And believe me: that can sometimes be quite surprising compared to the color sample in daylight outside.
You can learn from combining
Think in combinations, not in loose colors. When choosing colors, it’s actually about choosing combinations. Think of the color of your floor or the couch that will be pushed back in front of the wall after a painting session.
Check, check, double check
If you go to the store with certain color codes, always check the color samples first before ordering the paint, to make sure it’s the right color. Colors on the screen can sometimes not match the paint in your can.
Dare!
And okay, although it’s not your goal to repaint a wall if you’ve chosen the wrong color, that’s not the end of the world, right? Because let’s be honest, repainting a wall is also done quickly. If you just dare, I’m sure it will turn out well!
