This is the Netflix Christmas movie everyone is talking about

It might just be my favorite part of the holiday season: watching all the (new) Christmas movies. Although the storylines are not very surprising, the romance is sweet and everything turns out well, it’s enjoyable every time. Netflix has added another gem to the collection. ‘Meet Me Next Christmas’ is the new Christmas movie; and it’s delightful.
Looking for that one ticket
Just before Layla (Christina Milian) leaves for New York to spend Christmas with her boyfriend, all flights are canceled. While waiting for updates, she meets fellow traveler James (Kofi Siriboe). There’s an instant connection between them and before he has to leave, James makes her a special proposal: if she is still single next Christmas Eve, they will meet in New York at the concert of the band Pentatonix. They don’t exchange social media, fate will have to decide. Exactly one year later, Layla is (of course) single and decides to follow through on the deal. The only problem: she doesn’t have a ticket for the now completely sold-out concert. In desperation, she hires Teddy (Devale Ellis) through a personal concierge service to find her a ticket. Together they embark on a quest through New York so Layla can find her true love. The only question is where.
Pentatonix
Anyone familiar with a cappella music or who has seen ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ has probably heard of Pentatonix. An American a cappella group consisting of Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Matthew Sallee, and Kevin Olusola. Besides the fact that the film revolves around finding a ticket for their concert, the band itself also plays a significant role. We see their preparations for the show, but also how they become involved in Layla’s quest. Especially for ‘Meet Me Next Christmas’, they wrote the eponymous title song that is also heard in the film; as is customary with a cappella without instruments and just their voices. That remains impressive.
The ideal Christmas movie
Is it the most surprising movie ever? No, not really; although you could wonder if a Christmas movie ever is. Still, the film dominates the Netflix top 10. The chemistry between the main characters, the music of Pentatonix, and a hefty dose of humor make it truly a recommendation. It’s a case of ‘just nice daydreaming’, exactly what you want from a Christmas movie.
‘Meet Me Next Christmas’ is now available on Netflix.
