After ‘Squid Game’ we were sure, South Korea makes really good series. But before Netflix took over, there was already another gem to see: ‘Crash Landing on You’. The drama series tells the story of an impossible love and the tensions between North and South Korea. This forgotten title is the third highest-rated Korean series ever, and that's more than deserved. A perfect combination of humor, drama, and especially a lot of romance.

An unfortunate landing

The South Korean businesswoman Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) is about to take over her father's billion-dollar company. But before she fully immerses herself in this, she seeks one last moment of relaxation by going paragliding. During her flight, Yoon Se-ri is thrown off course by a storm and ends up just over the border in North Korea. There she is found by Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin), a member of the elite and captain in the Korean People's Army. He should actually have her arrested, but something holds him back. He decides to help her return to her homeland. Soon, the two notice the significant differences between north and south, and the increasing (political) tensions between the countries make their plan even more difficult. The longer they know each other, the closer they become. This, of course, leads to necessary problems and secrets.

Growing romance

From the very first second, it is clear: there is a spark between Yoon Se-ri and Ri Jeong-hyeok. The harder they try to push each other away, the clearer their feelings become. The romantic tension is palpable and seems to only grow stronger. And this while the two do not kiss even once. A big bow to Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin. Perhaps unknown names to us, but in Korea, they are the celebs. Their acting truly makes the series and lets you dream away. Another fun fact: it's not surprising that their romance comes across so well, the two actually fell in love while filming the series. They are now even married and have a baby. That only makes all of this even sweeter.

A glimpse into the unknown

North Korea is one of the most closed-off countries in the world. We know very little about what life is really like there. ‘Crash Landing on You’ helps satisfy that curiosity and gives us a small glimpse into what it must be like. And not just the military, but also ‘normal’ life. We see their (delicious) eating habits and how every day the power is cut off for a few hours. For the series, the creators spoke with various North Korean defectors, one of whom was even part of the writing team. All to make the series realistic.

With sixteen episodes of over an hour, you'll be entertained for a while. That's why this series is perfect to completely lose yourself in this Christmas holiday. ‘Crash Landing on You’ is available on Netflix.
