Why Martin Garrix's mother doesn't want him to park his Ferrari in front of the door

Amsterdam transforms this weekend back into the dance capital of the world. Martin Garrix is one of the big names during the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). This year he has a chance to win the title of best DJ in the world for the fifth time and thus become the best ever. But who is Martin or Martijn Garritsen actually.

Young talent

Martin, who is actually named Martijn Garritsen, was 8 years old when he saw Tiësto's performance during the Olympic Summer Games in Athens. At that moment, he knew for sure, I want to make music. He started playing guitar and later began DJing. First as DJ Marty from his bedroom in Amstelveen. He posted his own tracks on the Soundcloud website and sent out demos. At 16, he signed his first contract with Spinnin’ Records. He dropped out of high school and obtained an MBO diploma in pop music at the Herman Brood Academy. In 2013, he scored his first hit with the song ‘Animals’ and then things went quickly. In 2016, he was named the best DJ in the world and founded his own record label Stmpd Rcrds.

Still humble

Despite his fortune now being in the millions, he remains humble. And he probably inherited that from his parents. For example, he would never be allowed to park his Ferraris in front of the door, because his mother doesn't want the neighbors to talk about it. About rides in limousines, he previously said: “My mom keeps saying: ‘Boy, this is absurd.’ And it is, of course.”

Best friends with Max Verstappen

Martijn has been good friends with Max Verstappen for 10 years. During the NOC*NSF Sports Gala in 2014, he was allowed to present the Young Talent Award to Max and since then the two have kept in touch. They find common ground in the fact that they have both been in the spotlight since a young age and do not lead a ‘normal’ life. “We both do our thing. And if you are normal and just do it, and can talk well about things you encounter along the way, then that helps to deal with everything,” says Max. Whenever possible, they seek each other out. Martijn was there when Max won his very first world title, which was also celebrated together.

Still very private

With his music, Martijn is constantly in the spotlight, but we actually know little about his love life. For a while, he was in a relationship with model Sharelle Shriek, but that ended in 2019. Since then, he has not had an official girlfriend, although the media is on top of it. Juicechannel Reality FBI claimed last August that Martijn was together with the Swedish Hilda Sigurdsson. He was said to secretly like her Instagram photos and then remove the likes again. The two also posted stories in almost exactly the same place. Quite suspicious, of course.

ADE 2024

Next Saturday, Martijn will give a show in the Johan Cruijff Arena. On Wednesday, he will perform with his label at AFAS Live. During the announcement of the DJ Mag top 100, he has a chance at his fifth title of best DJ in the world. This would put him on par with Armin van Buuren and (together) the best DJ ever.
