Not a day goes by without me washing my face, even twice in the evening. First a makeup remover and then one that really cleans my skin. The same ritual in the morning, but without makeup remover of course. I recently heard that people with a sensitive, dry skin might be better off skipping the morning cleansing, as it could strip the skin and water also dries it out. There’s something to be said for that, but I love cleansing my skin, even in the morning, even with my dry skin. And then of course an extra layer of nourishing ingredients on top.

Cleansers then. Always a delightful search. But once found, at a nice price, you’re set for a while and can cross something off your skincare bucket list. Our favorite facial cleansers under €20? Here they are. High on our list: Cetaphil. It’s in many Amayzine colleagues’ bathrooms and I’ve been using it for years. Clean, gentle, does its job. What more do you want?

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
A firm favorite in our editorial team. Gentle, soap-free, pH-neutral and the number one dermatologist-recommended skincare brand in the US, and we get it. Perfect for sensitive skin (even suitable for intimate areas, yes really) and mild enough for daily use. They’ve now also launched one with a gentle exfoliation, even for the most sensitive skin types. And if you’re at the drugstore: grab that mega jar of moisturizing cream too. Wonderful for your face, body, and down under, for example after shaving to prevent irritation. Ideal.

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser
This facial cleanser is gentle, creamy, and contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid. What we also like: you can buy it in a liter size and there’s a refill bag available. Because your whole body should benefit, right? Your skin doesn’t stop at your neck. So if you have bumps on your arms or legs? This cleanser works wonders there too.

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser
I just opened mine to get the last bit out. Works great as a makeup remover, even for your eye makeup, because I want everything out. A creamy, balm-like facial cleanser that dissolves makeup and hydrates without irritating. And that for about €11.

COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser
A Korean classic. You probably know the brand from the Snail 96 essence that went viral on TikTok for a while. This fresh cleansing gel with a low pH is ideal for the morning. It has a light tea tree scent and cleans your skin without that tight feeling you sometimes get after washing. And the best part? It costs only about five euros. Really.

Oat Cleansing Balm from The Inkey List
An award-winning bestseller from the collection, which gently and mildly removes makeup, SPF, and other oils from your skin. Thanks to oat kernel oil and colloidal oatmeal, it works soothingly and combats redness. These ingredients also prevent your skin from drying out. And something nice for this summer: you can also use it as a shaving balm. Quite handy, right? This balm melts away your makeup without stripping your skin. Soothes (because that’s what oats do), nourishes, and feeds the skin.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser
This gentle, foaming cleanser thoroughly cleans your skin. It can also remove makeup, but I would use it more as a second cleanse. A combination of squalane, vitamin E, and avocado oil helps nourish and hydrate the skin, while apricot kernel oil gently exfoliates. It feels rich on your skin and after rinsing, your skin feels wonderfully soft and clean, just as it should.

Vinoclean Cleansing Mousse from Caudalie
I once heard that a mousse is mainly intended for people with oily or combination skin, but I never really believed that. And good thing too, because otherwise, I would never have tried this one from Caudalie. This mousse is light as air and smells so fresh, think: grape water, sage, and a hint of lavender. A kind of spa feeling in your bathroom, and I’m not exaggerating. And with a price tag of €18, it’s also quite friendly for your wallet.

Which facial cleanser suits your skin type?

Then you don’t need to research that anymore:

Is your skin dry and/or sensitive: Cetaphil, CeraVe Hydrating, The Ordinary you want to shop now
Combination/oily: CeraVe Foaming, COSRX will make you happy
Sensitive/allergic: Simple, Oat Cleansing Balm to soothe your skin
Do you wear makeup every day like I do? Then The Ordinary, Oat Balm, or Kiehl’s is a good choice

Whatever you choose, make sure to apply your facial cleanser gently and don’t scrub too hard. Scalding hot water is not a good idea. Work with clean hands, massage your product in for at least half a minute, and afterwards use a soft, clean towel (or even better: a paper towel if you have acne-prone skin). And yes, if you wear makeup: go for the double cleanse. First a balm or oil, then your favorite gel. Trust me, your skin will be clean and ready for your skincare afterwards.
