These 10 Christmas snacks contain the most calories

By

Today is December 10th, so it’s practically Christmas already. Right? And that means one thing: the countdown to Christmas with the family has officially begun. Everywhere you go, there’s a table ready that’s almost collapsing under the weight of Christmas treats, mini quiches, cheese platters, and things that shine as if they’re calling your name. It’s all very cozy, unless you’re just in your healthy era of life. Because yes, how do you handle that? You want to join in, not make it difficult, just snack a little… but you also don’t want your calculated calorie deficit to suddenly turn into a Christmas edition of ‘how far can you go overboard?’. So you sit down, smile sweetly at your family, and try to subtly navigate through a landscape of calorie bombs. But which snacks should you better avoid if you want to stay within your daily margin? Well, these ones.

1. Cocktail sausages in puff pastry

Yes, puff pastry is really a silent killer when it comes to calories. In one slice, there are already 275 kilocalories, which is really insane, right? For such a small bite, you usually cut them in half, so that makes it 137.5, but yes… That cocktail sausage of 25 calories, so in one of those mini bites, you’re quickly around 162.5 kcal. Wow. They seem very small and innocent, but they really aren’t. (But they are delicious, unfortunately.)

2. Mini quiches

The number of calories can of course vary depending on the filling, but a leek quiche already has 120. This one with a lot of vegetables even has 294. Or this one with leeks, blue cheese, and mushrooms? That one has 580 kcal… So that’s really a small overshoot of your calorie laws, but a very large one. Now it is of course true that this, just like with the cocktail sausages in puff pastry, depends on the size. Are you making a mini quiche as an appetizer, or do you have really super small ones that you can hold with one finger on the table? That determines how many kcal are in it.

3. Meatballs in satay sauce

This might be hard to swallow, so keep your water handy when you hear this news: in 100 grams of meatballs, there are already 208 kcal. That’s 40 per meatball. Now this isn’t so much, but I think no one needs a truth serum to admit that you always take more than one. If you eat five? Then you’re already at those 208 calories. And the satay sauce makes it even worse. In 1 tablespoon of 30 grams, there are already 74 hidden. So before you know it, you’re eating 80 calories with one meatball. Do you want to drown your ball in the satay sauce? Well, then you understand where I’m going with this.

4. Shrimp cocktail

The ultimate classic: a shrimp cocktail. I must confess that I’ve never had one because I really don’t like shrimp, but at Christmas, almost all of the Netherlands eats one. There’s hardly any sugar in it, but fat and calories? Those are there. It might be delicious, but thanks to the mayonnaise, crème fraîche, ketchup, whiskey, shrimp, and that modest lettuce, one glass already cheerfully adds up to 210 calories. Do you have this as an appetizer? No problem, but then you have to be careful with all those other snacks.

5. The Christmas charcuterie board

Is it a party without a charcuterie board? No, of course not. Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Sinterklaas, Valentine’s Day, or a birthday: this is always part of the party. And I get that. What’s not to love about all those delicious meats, different cheeses, grapes, apple slices, cheese cubes, olives, and – yes, I could go on for hours – that kind of stuff? Exactly. You can easily shove all that deliciousness down, but you quickly reach 500 calories. This can even go up to 1000. Nuts, cheese, meat, and bread just contain a lot. In 1 handful of nuts, there are already 160 kcal, and one toast with brie? Then you already have 90 in your hand. Fuet (my favorite) has 30 calories per slice, and if you have a glass of wine with it? Then you’re also at 100 calories per glass. So in short: when we talk about calorie bombs, this is a calorie cannon that shoots all kinds of little bombs.

6. Deviled eggs

Mmm, okay… It depends on what you put in that filling, but there can really be a lot of calories in here. In a ready-made deviled egg, there are about 58, so that’s not too bad. But if you make them yourself? Then it can go up to over 100. Because yes: who doesn’t put a little extra mayonnaise in? Now the amount is still manageable, but it’s very easy to eat more of these bites. Before you know it, you’re at 400 calories, while you’re almost fainting from hunger, because those eggs don’t really fill you up.

7. Christmas stollen

Have you ever celebrated a Christmas breakfast and not eaten Christmas stollen? I haven’t. This is traditionally always on my table. It’s just something so simple that always fits in. Just like ice cream. But yes, is it really healthy? Nope. In 1 slice, there are already 155 calories. That’s more than in a croquette. Yes, seriously. That’s all due to that marzipan. What would I do in your situation? Leave this in the morning, then you can eat a bit more snacks in the evening. You have to do something to make the holidays somewhat enjoyable.

8. Puff pastry snacks

There you have our assassin again: puff pastry. Those ‘pigs in a blanket’ weren't too bad, but in general, puff pastry snacks contain a lot of calories. Just think of those mini sausage rolls or cheese rolls. They already contain 120 kcal each. And those Christmas trees with cheese and pesto that everyone and their mother makes? One tree (130 grams) already contains more than 500 calories... Ouch. That hurts.

9. Crostini

This is also one of those cases where ‘you can make it as extravagant as you want’, but you really won't get very few calories in such a crostini. Do you buy those ready-made toasts? Then there are already more than 117 kcal per toast. And you haven't even added your toppings yet. If you choose Parmesan cheese, camembert, serrano ham, and a cranberry chutney? Yes, then that calorie counter goes up.

10. Cheese sticks

I don't think there's a Dutch person on this planet who has never eaten a cheese stick. Those large fresh ones are my ultimate favorite, but at parties and during Christmas, you usually have some small snacks of this. Think of those cheese sticks with Gouda cheese or large homemade ones with pesto and grated cheese. Whatever you like, it's delicious, but there are really a lot of calories in it. Cheese is just not a friend of your calorie deficit. The average cheese stick can contain between 150 and 300 kcal. So if you ask me: yes, you might as well skip these.

Okay okay, that was a lot of snacks. Is there anything left at that Christmas party that you can eat? Surely. And remember dear people: if you do eat some of these treats, it's really not like your progress has disappeared from the stage and been replaced by a Christmas wreath. You will just be eating your planned healthy snacks again tomorrow with your good behavior. So there's really nothing wrong if you indulge once.
