This is how you do the very best deep clean this year

Deep cleaning. Well, it’s something. If you, like me, live online chronically, you’ve probably seen it at some point: people deep cleaning their homes. And honestly? I can really enjoy it. Watching how to clean an oven with the best products, or those videos where someone goes through the whole house with a steam cleaner. Is it a guilty pleasure? Not necessarily, but it is educational. So yes: you can really learn something from this.

Now, at the end of the year, you might as well tidy up and clean. Isn’t that the best way to enter the new year? After that busy December period, your house is really cleansed and you’re ready for all the new energy. Don’t do this alone, cleaning queen. Ask your partner or kids to lend you a hand. It’s fun and they’ll see how it should be done. So pay close attention, because this is how you do the absolute best deep clean of this year:

1. Tidy up

It’s not the most fun task, but before you can start dusting, vacuuming, and mopping, you first need to clear the clutter. So start with that and really look everywhere. Even in the spots you usually skip. Take a look at what’s on top of that cabinet. And those shoes that have been by the front door for months? You’re finally going to tidy those up. Have you ever looked at how your spice drawer looks? That could use a cleaning too. Then put everything back where it came from. So put those stray rubber bands back in the box and return your shampoo and conditioner to their rightful place. Is everything back where it should be? Then you can continue.

2. Dust from top to bottom

When cleaning, it’s really important to work from top to bottom. There’s no point in mopping your floor first and then dusting your kitchen cabinets at the end of the evening. So yes, you’re going to do that first. Grab a Swiffer or another duster and start with your kitchen cabinets and the top of the wall. Take everything with you while you’re at it, including the top edge of the TV and your clock. Then do your furniture, the baseboards, and behind your furniture. Trust me, it’s really dirty there.

3. Gather laundry

If you want to do a real deep clean, you really need to wash everything. Let those clothes stay in the laundry basket for now and get to work on your cushions on the couch, your duvet cover, fitted sheet, towels, bathrobes, bath mats, and even the dog bed. Start this laundry while you’re cleaning the rest.

4. Clean all surfaces

This is the moment you’re going to clean everything with a good microfiber cloth and a lot of cleaning product. Think about your dining table, coffee table, cabinets, nightstand, and dressers… When was the last time you cleaned those? Exactly. Remove all your decorative items, like Christmas decorations you might still have out, photo frames, and reading lamps. Spray all-purpose cleaner on or make a soapy solution and get to cleaning. This applies not only to your furniture but really to everything. Light switches, outlets (with a dry cloth), door handles, and everything you touch often. So also the thermostat.

5. Also think about the furniture you sit on

That couch and comfy lounge chair where you spend your evenings also really need a cleaning. If possible, it’s handy to lift or slide these (together) so you can vacuum underneath them properly. Then vacuum them in every corner you can reach. Can you remove the upholstery from your couch? Then you can wash it along with your duvet cover. If not, you can clean the couch with a stain remover. This works a bit like a steam cleaner and ensures that all the nasty odors and stains (of course) disappear from your couch. You fill it with water and a stain remover or carpet cleaner and you’re good to go. Do this with your bed and mattress as well.

6. Mirrors and windows

Then, if you still have the energy, clean all the windows and mirrors.

7. The kitchen

This is perhaps one of the most important places to clean well. This is where you cook food and wash your dishes, so it really needs to be top-notch. Now that everything on top of the kitchen cabinets and the extractor hood has been dusted, start cleaning these parts. You can do this with a cloth and a soapy solution or a specific cleaner.

Then you’re going to dust and clean your countertop. Remove everything, including your coffee machine and the sandwich maker. Clean these appliances themselves and set them aside. Spray your countertop with all-purpose cleaner or a specific kitchen cleaner and wipe it down with a microfiber cloth. Is it dry? Then the items can go back.

This deep clean is also definitely a reminder to clean your dishwasher, extractor hood, and oven well. Then go clean your refrigerator. Take everything out, clean every glass shelf, and give the inside a good scrub. You don’t have to do all this at once, but you’re already in that cleaning flow. So my advice? Take everything with you. The Pink Stuff is really great for cleaning your oven.

Oh, and are you going to deep clean the dishwasher? Then you can use some dish soap, but – big but – make sure you really get it out well. Because if there are still residues in it and you use the dishwasher, your house will be flooded with bubbles and suds. You don’t want that, do you? You can also use baking soda and some vinegar. Once you’ve done all this, you can put a bottle of dishwasher cleaner in your rack and run a regular cycle. This makes your machine even cleaner inside.

And lastly, clean the countertop, vacuum, and mop the floor. Clean the countertop (and yes: you have to remove everything. So also your coffee maker and that sandwich maker). Clean these as well. When the countertop is dry, you can put these items back.

8. the bathroom

Now that the towels, bathrobes, and bath mats are in the wash, you can start cleaning the rest. Empty the trash can, replace the bag, and clean the outside well. Then dust the outside of the toilet and clean it. Next, scrub the inside of the toilet. After that, scrub your shower clean and don’t forget to clean the faucet, the shower drain, and the showerhead. Make sure to dry everything well to prevent mold from forming.

🚽✨ Time for a toilet deep clean reminder! 🤢 1️⃣ Start by dusting the toilet first to avoid pushing wet debris around. A duster you can toss or wash afterward is best! 🪞 2️⃣ Spray and wipe all exteriors, including the flushing handle and all the nooks and crannies of the toilet! 🚰✨ 3️⃣ Grab some paper towel and wipe the top and underside of the seats. It’s best to remove the toilet seat, which usually only takes a few seconds to unscrew and pull off. You’ll be amazed by how much grime gets stuck under there! If you’re pressed for time, use a pressure steamer to push all the gunk out for you! Gross, but effective! 💦😱 4️⃣ Fill the inside of the bowl with toilet bowl cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing, making sure to get under the lip of the toilet. 🚾 5️⃣ Once done, flush and rinse the toilet bowl scrubber in fresh water. Spray to disinfect if needed. Let the brush dry fully between the seats before putting it away to avoid mold and bacteria growth in the brush holder. 🧽🌟 6️⃣ Don’t forget to clean the sides and bottom of the toilet, especially the floor next to the toilet if you have males in your home who tend to miss their aim… You don’t want to see that under a black light… 🕵️♀️🔦 ✨👏🏻And you’re all done! 9. the toilet

Do you have another toilet downstairs or in another location? Then clean that one too.

10. Clean the trash cans

This is not a sexy task, but it has to be done: cleaning your trash cans. A lot of junk goes in, so it can happen that the outside gets dirty or the inside starts to smell. Refresh the bag afterward and you’re done with this step.

11. Then vacuum all the floors and mop afterward

The title says it all and this is perhaps the simplest step. Vacuum all the floors and then mop. Yes, I can’t make it any easier than that.

12. Finishing touches

Open a window, make your bed with the clean sheets, and put everything back where it was. Light a candle and relax on the couch after a super busy day.

Now it’s really not the case that you have to do all of this in one day. Make it a cleaning weekend or repeat this process throughout the week, room by room. I personally find it easy to block one day to do everything at once, but that is absolutely not a requirement. Hopefully, you find these tips helpful and you’ll enter 2026 feeling fresh and fruity.
