These top movies are leaving Netflix

Have you finally found a nice movie to add to your (already quite) long wishlist – and then it’s leaving Netflix. How annoying is that? Life never seems to cooperate. We’ve become victims again, because these cult classics like Pitch Perfect and Eat Pray Love are leaving us. Just watch and be quick, folks, because all these 10 movies are disappearing from the screen.
Ted (September 15)
When John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) wishes as a little boy that his teddy bear comes to life, that wish comes true thanks to a falling star. The world is in shock and Ted grows into a celebrity. The film then jumps to 2012, where the now-adult John and Ted are still best friends and lead a rather… immature life. John’s girlfriend, Lori (Mila Kunis), is fed up and encourages him to get his life together. And Ted? He’s not having it easy either. His life of sex with prostitutes and smoking needs to change too. He gets a job, but when everything seems to be getting better, something terrible happens because of the disturbed superfan Donny. Want to have a good laugh? Then you need to this watch it a.s.a.p.
Pitch Perfect (September 15)
Ah. Pitch Perfect. It has become cultural heritage by now. Can you still sing Since You’ve Been Gone without automatically singing along to the a cappella version from the movie? No? Then I’m probably the only one. In the film, Becca joins the Bellas, an a cappella group, when she starts at a new university. The group is a mess of quirky characters and no longer as successful as they used to be. When they compete in a national competition again, Becca brings a fresh breeze to the team. Sweet? Far from it. This film is not a musical, but a hilarious comedy with dry and sometimes harsh humor. You must see this at least once in your life. Or watch it again, like I do. I know what I’m doing this weekend: enjoying this classic one more time.
Pitch Perfect 3 (September 15)
A second and third part are always worse than the first, right? Opinions differ on that, but the third part of Pitch Perfect is definitely not boring. After the original Bellas graduate, they come together again after three years. They hate their jobs and have fallen into the rut of life. New Bella Emily gathers the old group to perform again. When they are not allowed on stage, the group realizes how much they miss each other and singing together. Aubrey convinces them to participate in a competition one last time. Folks, this is a crazy one. We’re not just going to sing – there’s action and drama. People even get kidnapped. What?? Yes, really. Do you want to catch this crazy whirlwind of a movie? Be quick.
Scarface (September 15)
A true classic. With Al Pacino, no less. He shows with his amazing acting that there is a dark side to the ‘American dream’. Scarface, loosely based on the life of the notorious gangster Al Capone, is about the Cuban refugee Tony Montana. In the 80s, he comes to Miami and works his way up from a petty criminal to a powerful drug lord. We see how drugs, greed, power, and especially paranoia ultimately cost him his empire. It’s such an old-school drug film, comparable to The Godfather and Goodfellas. Italian mafiosi, deals, and a lot of good quotes. Really a film you can brag about having seen. Then you seem like a real film connoisseur.
Oppenheimer (September 20)
A Christopher Nolan film leaving Netflix? Yes, believe me. The seven-time Oscar-winning film is leaving the streaming service. Oppenheimer tells the story of the American theoretical physicist who was the brain behind the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima. It’s a raw story about what war costs us, and that sometimes you have to set aside your principles for the ‘greater good’. Haven’t seen this in the cinema? Then you’ve really missed something. Turn on Netflix, because you absolutely want to watch this one.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (September 21)
The cult classic My Big Fat Greek Wedding is fan-tas-tic, but have you seen part three yet? It hasn’t been out long, and yet it’s already leaving Netflix. The heartwarming film about Greek culture and self-improvement was a success, and part three is just as fun. What made part one so good was the amazing family bond. The Greek family, who didn’t understand the relationship between Ian and Toula, eventually welcomed him into their midst. Exactly that funny family dynamic is central again. And this time you see a lot of Greece itself: Vrisi and Athens, for example. It immediately makes me want to go on vacation. You too? Then watch this film first before it’s gone. Yássas!
Eat Pray Love (September 29)
It’s been a while since I’ve seen this, but it’s etched in my memory. It’s such a feel-good movie that everyone should see at least once. Julia Roberts truly shines in this travel film. Elizabeth Gilbert (Julia) decides to finally choose herself after a messy divorce. She impulsively buys a plane ticket to Italy, where she falls in love with the country and the people. She eats things she never allowed herself before because of the calories, drinks with her new friends, and even travels further. In India and Indonesia, she finally learns to truly know herself. We don’t often call something iconic, but this film this really is. Self-love is central. Life is about more than working: go live your life for real. And that’s exactly what you should do too. Go girl, book those plane tickets! Take that trip you’ve been dreaming of for years, find that new job you want. But first, watch this film for inspiration. And motivation.
Clueless (October 4)
Teen drama? Hell yeah. If there’s one chick-flick that’s iconic, it’s Clueless. From amazing outfits that were the basis for countless trends to hilarious scenes that everyone recognizes from their youth. After thirty years, this film is still beloved, and we understand why. The chemistry between Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd is top-notch, the outfits are legendary, and the story remains fun. Cher Horowitz (Alicia) is a rich, popular girl known for setting people up and giving makeovers. When she tries to make the new girl popular, she learns more about the world and herself. Cher is quite a naïve girl who thinks money solves everything. She’s not mean, certainly not, but she can learn. That’s where Josh (Paul Rudd) comes in, who teaches her how the world really works and that she’s worth more than she thinks.
Ocean’s 8 (October 5)
In the mood for some action? In Ocean’s 8 a star-studded cast – Rihanna, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, and Sarah Paulson – is going to steal one of the most expensive necklaces in the world. The film is a sequel to the well-known Ocean’sseries with Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), Danny Ocean’s sister, has just been released from prison and takes on one last job: stealing the €150 million diamond Cartier necklace at the Met Gala. She can’t do it alone, so she recruits a team of smart women to get the job done. Of course, only women can do this job. A perfect example of women power and women supporting women.
Crazy Rich Asians (October 9)
How I’ve never seen this film before, I don’t know – but it was a huge success. Crazy Rich Asians is about Rachel Chu, an economics professor who flies to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick Young to attend a wedding. During the flight, she discovers that her boyfriend is secretly extremely wealthy and that she’s going to meet his difficult family. Once they arrive, Rachel finds herself in a world full of extravagant clothes, luxury food, and backstabbing relatives. She loves Nick, but goes crazy from the over-the-top family that sees her only as a gold digger. Will love win? Or will Rachel be driven away by Nick’s mother, who would prefer to send her back to New York immediately?
