Glycerin: the perfect ingredient for super hydrated skin

By

If your skin feels dry, tight, or looks dull, there’s one ingredient you absolutely need to know about: glycerin. It may not be the most glamorous ingredient on the label, but it works. No TikTok hype, no promises in a prettier jar, just pure hydration and that makes me very happy. Glycerin is therefore the secret weapon for soft, elastic, and super hydrated skin.

But what exactly is glycerin?

Glycerin (also known as glycerol) is a colorless and odorless liquid that attracts water like a magnet. In skincare terms, it’s called a humectant: a substance that draws moisture from the air and from the deeper layers of the skin. Think of it like a sponge that absorbs everything and holds moisture well. And you might not have known this, but it’s true: it’s found in almost all skincare products. Think creams, serums, toners, and even makeup. It’s also used in medicine to promote faster wound healing and has a very soothing effect, which is great if you have eczema or rosacea.

Why is glycerin so good for your skin?

Glycerin really works wonders for your skin, it’s super hydrating: it attracts water and holds it even better, making the skin plumper, smoother, and fresher. It also helps strengthen the skin barrier. Think of it as an extra protective layer that combats irritation and redness. Another advantage is that glycerin gets along very well with other ingredients. Think of hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and niacinamide; together they form a kind of dream team that gives your skin an extra boost, and of course, we never say no to that. And the biggest advantage: really anyone can use it. Whether you have dry, sensitive, or oily skin, glycerin adapts like a sort of chameleon. And it’s also suitable for vegans, because glycerin is plant-based or synthetic, so you can choose. Really a nice advantage.

How to best use glycerin

Glycerin is already present in many products, but if you want to do things really well, I have some tips for you. Here they are:
1. Use a toner or serum with glycerin right after cleansing
2. Apply it to slightly damp skin to achieve that sponge effect and promote full moisture absorption
3. Follow up with a moisturizer that locks in moisture, such as creams containing hyaluronic acid or ceramides.

Glycerin and hyaluronic acid: the winning duo

Instead of choosing between glycerin and hyaluronic acid, combine both. Hyaluronic acid attracts moisture, glycerin keeps it. Together they give your skin that “glass skin” look à la Hailey Bieber that we all dream of.

Check the labels: is there glycerin?

Always take a look at the ingredient list in your skincare products. If glycerin is among the first five ingredients, you’re good to go. But be careful that there are no drying substances (like denatured alcohol) or overly strong fragrances. Those are not good for the skin.
