Glycerin: the ingredient for super hydrated skin

If your skin feels dry, tight, or looks dull, there is one ingredient you really need to get to know: glycerin. Perhaps not the most glamorous ingredient on the label, but it works. No TikTok hype, no promises in an even prettier jar, just pure hydration and that makes me very happy. Glycerin is therefore the secret weapon for soft, supple, and super-hydrated skin.
But, what exactly is glycerin?
Glycerin (also known as glycerol) is a colorless, odorless liquid that attracts water like a magnet. In skincare terms, it is called a humectant: a substance that draws moisture from the air and from the deeper layers of the skin. Think of it as a sponge that soaks everything up and holds it well. And what you might not have known, but is really true: it is in almost every skincare product. Think of creams, serums, toners, and even makeup. It is also used in medicine to help wounds heal faster and it has a mega-soothing effect, which is very nice if you have eczema or rosacea.
Why is glycerin so good for your skin?
Glycerin really works wonders for your skin, it is mega hydrating: it attracts water and holds it even better, making your skin look fuller, smoother, and fresher. Additionally, it helps strengthen your skin barrier. Think of it as an extra protective layer that combats irritation and redness. What is also nice: glycerin gets along very well with other ingredients. Think of hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and niacinamide; together they form a kind of dream team that gives your skin an extra boost and of course, we say no to that. And then the biggest advantage: really everyone can use it. Whether you have dry, sensitive, or oily skin, glycerin adapts like a kind of chameleon. And it is also suitable for vegans, because glycerin is plant-based or synthetic, so you have a choice. Which is very nice.
How to use glycerin optimally
Glycerin is already in many products, but if you really want to do it right, I have some tips for you. Here they come:
1. Use a toner or serum with glycerin right after cleansing
2. Apply it to slightly damp skin to achieve that sponge-like effect and fully absorb moisture
3. Finish with a moisturizer that retains moisture, such as creams that contain hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
Glycerin and hyaluronic acid: the power duo
Instead of choosing between glycerin and hyaluronic acid, combine them. Hero ingredient hyaluronic acid attracts moisture, glycerin ensures it stays put. Together they give your skin that glass skin look à la Hailey Bieber that we all dream of.
Watch your labels: is glycerin in there?
Always check the ingredient list of your skincare. Is glycerin among the first five ingredients? Then you're good. But also watch out for drying substances (like denatured alcohol) or strong perfumes. Because your skin won't be happy about that.
