Diaper cream as a face mask: hype or horror?

By

HEMA is doing great – their social media team is on point. A trend goes viral, and within a split second they respond with their own, hilarious video. Everything with humor, and that makes us happy.

This time it's about the HEMA diaper cream – but not for baby bottoms, no, for your face. As a face mask, that is. Ingredients like zinc oxide can be found in such a cream, as it helps prevent irritation and redness – exactly what you want for a baby wearing diapers. But on TikTok, this cream is now being massively used as a viral face mask. It is said to be the beauty hack against impurities and ideal for people with oily skin. Your pores would become cleaner and your skin more even.

Sounds almost too good to be true? Unfortunately, it is.

It may help in the short term, but with frequent use, it can actually worsen skin problems and further clog pores. Think of that time when everyone smeared toothpaste on a pimple (confession time: I did this too, way back) to dry it out as quickly as possible. Yes, zinc oxide works anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, but it is not a miracle cure for acne. An ingredient like vitamin A acid (retinoids) is much more effective and better for your skin.

So, as with every beauty hype: stay logical and check the facts with specialists before you enthusiastically smeared a tube of diaper cream on your face.
