Binge-watch-alert, and this time a series that pulls you in through Los Angeles, aka LA – the city of dreams. But what happens when the image of the city and its inhabitants begins to fade? That is exactly what the new series I Love LA tries to unravel. Rachel Sennott is the creator, writer, and lead actress in the series. A good Hollywood series? Call your girlfriends a.s.a.p. to get addicted to this new HBO Max gem.

All about friendships and growing up

First up: What can you expect? Maia (played by Rachel Sennott) confronts the reality of life in Los Angeles at the age of 27. She is searching for her place in the world as an ambitious woman trying to break into talent management. While struggling to find success, she also has a hard time maintaining her personal relationships. The first episode takes place on her birthday, where Maia wonders if she is doing well in her life. But… everything quickly becomes overshadowed by another challenge: her old friend Tallulah (played by Odessa A’zion) suddenly reappears.

Tallulah is now a successful influencer, and her arrival puts old friendships to the test once again. It becomes clear that the friendships within the close-knit group have not been without tension. Especially jealousy and the constant pressure of LA's ‘success’ lead to a dynamic where everyone challenges each other – sometimes unconsciously. As Maia tries to realize her dreams, she notices that her friends, who once were her support and refuge, are now more like her adversaries.

The Cast

Alongside Rachel Sennott, Odessa A’zion, Jordan Firstman, True Whitaker, and Josh Hutcherson also play lead roles in the series. Odessa A’zion, who plays Tallulah, is the typical influencer, but it is her friendship with Maia that forms the core of the series. The chemistry between the two is realistic and sometimes painfully honest.

Jordan Firstman plays Charlie, a stylist trying to find his way in hectic West Hollywood. True Whitaker brings Alani to life, Maia's calm friend who is always a support in her life. And then there’s Josh Hutcherson as Dylan, Maia’s boyfriend, who tries to maintain balance in the group but increasingly questions whether he is really making the right choice. Together they form a dynamic cast that perfectly depicts the complex and often hilarious world of LA.

@kahlenbarry Ngl Rachel Sennot’s “I Love LA” is way better than I anticipated. It explores the complexities of navigating friendship in a competitive city like Los Angeles, and the pretty and ugly that comes along with it. #ilovela #rachelsennott #joshhutcherson #hbo #tvshow ♬ original sound – Kahlen Barry
