IKEA HOME gets all kinds of smart devices and you want them

By

Do you want to fill your entire house with those smart devices? You know, those lamps that turn on with a press of your phone and a robot vacuum that starts cleaning when you say “go”? Those things are very handy, but they usually come with a price tag. I understand that you want to close your roller blinds from the couch, but not for €300. Just for you, forward-thinking techie, I have good news. IKEA is coming out with a brand new line of smart devices that are not expensive at all. Just pay attention, because at this price, you’ll want to grab them immediately.

What is different about these products compared to all the previous smart devices from IKEA?

For this launch, IKEA is using only Matter products for the first time. What is that? Matter is actually the younger and smarter sister of Zigbee – the old system that the Swedish retail chain used for their devices. That stable, yet somewhat outdated technology works well within their own ecosystem. Products from the same manufacturer and platform work well together, but combining? That’s a no-go. You often need a special hub for it to run smoothly.

This problem is a thing of the past with Matter: it is an open-source way that allows all your devices to work well together. You no longer have to fiddle with apps and hubs; it all happens automatically. It’s like a group leader that controls all the devices. Apple, Google, and Amazon are already on board, so it’s not surprising that IKEA is joining in. Imagine this: you only have Hue lamps hanging in your house and the remote control breaks. Where are you going to find a new remote? And especially: how expensive will it be? If it just doesn’t fit within your budget, you can simply use the IKEA remote with Matter technology on your lamps. Isn’t that great? That will save you a lot of money.

Which products are in the new collection?

I can hear you thinking: “What exactly do I get for this price?” Well, you get 21 new smart products. Whether you’re talking about lamps and sensors that measure humidity: IKEA has it all:

Lamps

IKEA has no less than eleven different lamps on offer. And no, these are not just the standard things you put in your living room. These lamps can change colors, dim, set your entire mood, or even light up your environment as you wish. A few highlights:

  • A27/E26: These standard bulb-shaped lamps of 60 mm give you the choice between color and white tones (1055 lumens, color-changing – handy for that cozy movie night). Or if you prefer to keep it calm, you can dim them (470 lumens). We call this: ambiance for every occasion.
  • P45 E14: Small lamp with a compact profile, ideal for a chic detail in your home. You can choose white tones that you can dim as you like (470 lumens or 806 lumens). Perfect for a soft glow next to your bed.
  • GU10: The spotlight! Not some old-fashioned, bright blue spotlight, but one that you set to color and white tones (470 lumens). Or you dim the white tones (575 lumens) – completely in your own style.

Sensors

Not always sure if your window is properly closed or if you might need to check that leak? No worries, IKEA has five new sensors that make your home even smarter. They help you keep everything in check, so you don’t have to manually check everything. Think of sensors for temperature, humidity, water leakage – maybe even your new favorite household helper!

  • MYGGSPRAY: Yes, you read that right, this is a motion sensor for indoors and outdoors. So if you’re sitting comfortably on the couch in the evening and suddenly hear something – don’t panic, it’s just the sensor letting you know that everything is fine.
  • MYGGBETT: Motion sensor for your windows and doors. No more hassle with checks: if you’ve forgotten to close your window, you’ll just get a notification. How cool is that?
  • TIMMERFLOTTE: A sensor that looks at temperature and humidity. Handy for the kitchen, laundry room, or for your plants – so you know if you need to adjust the thermostat.

Remote controls

Everyone needs them: remote controls that keep an eye on your smart devices and operate them from a distance. IKEA has not one, but three new variants. Look, sometimes swiping is just not enough – sometimes you really just want to press.

  • BILRESA: The classic variant with double buttons (great for simple control of your lamps or other devices).
  • BILRESA: With a scroll wheel if you want something simple.
  • BILRESA Remote Control Kits: This is a set of three remote controls with colored buttons. You have them with double buttons or scroll wheels.

Smart plugs

The GRILLPLATS smart plug is the solution for remotely controlling your regular lamps and small household appliances. Whether it’s that lamp you normally have to turn on every evening or your coffee maker – you do it all with the press of a button.

These smart devices fit into every household, from the living room to the bedroom and even the bathroom (yes, you really don’t want to miss that water leakage sensor!). And you can use it all with any device you have with the IKEA Home smart app, so that will save you a lot of money and effort. Because these? They are not expensive. We don’t know all the prices yet, but since the motion sensor on the website is €9.99, that promises a lot of good.
