I love oil for my skin so much. Less thick and less sticky than cream. One of the best you can buy is 100% pure jojoba oil. This oil originally comes from the seeds of the Simmondsia chinensis, a shrub that grows in the dry deserts of Central and North America. This plant can survive in extreme conditions, from 4 degrees at night to 45 degrees during the day.

Pure Jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds through pressing, which is why it is also called ‘liquid gold’. In fact, Jojoba oil is a liquid wax that is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants, such as vitamin E. This makes it a very valuable addition to your skincare routine. At least, for me it is.

The benefits of jojoba oil for the skin

Jojoba oil is ideal for almost every skin type. It nourishes the skin, retains moisture, and ensures that your skin stays soft and supple without clogging. The oil dissolves sebum (which makes it ideal for people with oily skin) and has antibacterial properties (which also makes it suitable for caring for acne-prone skin).

How to use jojoba oil for skincare (and hair care!)?

You can use jojoba oil in many different ways in your routine, both for your skin and your hair. I use it like this:

  • Extra hydration: I apply the oil before my day cream, but you can also use it after your day cream. Do keep in mind: a good day cream or moisturizer often contains more active ingredients than the oil, so it's better if you use both.
  • Facial and body massage: Perfect for giving your skin extra care with a light facial massage for a healthy glow. For example, I don't just do my face, but also my neck, décolletage, hands, and elbows.
  • Removing eye makeup: Put a few drops on your fingertips and gently remove your makeup. Do keep in mind: waterproof makeup doesn't always come off completely.
  • Aftershave: Ideal for men, as it calms the skin after shaving.
  • Caring for cuticles: Moisturize the cuticles with a little jojoba oil for extra care.
  • Hair care: My favorite use of jojoba oil. When my hair is dry or dull, I apply a few drops to the hair ends. You can also use it as a hair mask by massaging it in overnight and rinsing it out the next morning. It adds shine and makes your hair wonderfully soft.

Jojoba oil versus other oils:

There are of course many different plant oils, and each oil has its own benefits. Jojoba oil is a light safe choice that is very well absorbed by the skin. Other oils, such as camellia oil, are rich in omega-9 and work well for sensitive or dry skin. Kukui oil is particularly quickly absorbing and ideal for inflammation, while rice oil is great for protection against sun damage.

How to choose pure and high-quality jojoba oil?

My favorite jojoba oil is from Dr. Leenarts. But if you are also looking for one that suits you: make sure to choose a jojoba oil that is 100% pure oil, without additions of cheaper oils or perfume. Cold-pressed jojoba oil contains the most active ingredients, so that is the best choice. Organic variants are often the best option, as you can be sure that there are no harmful pesticides in the oil.

Are there any side effects or allergic reactions possible?

No, almost not, jojoba oil is generally very safe for most skin types. But it is always good to be cautious with new products. Try a small amount of oil on a patch of skin and wait a few hours to check for any reactions.

The best way to store jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is resistant to oxidation, which means it is super long-lasting (much longer than other oils)
Store the oil in a cool place and use it within two years for the best results.
