Bizarre: the Depressed hair trend

You woke up this morning one hundred percent with messy, tangled and frizzy hair – same girl, same. Well, newsflash: that’s exactly the look the fashion world can’t get enough of. This messy trend is also called ‘Depressed hair’ and although it may sound like something you need a therapy card for, it’s actually the most liberating hair trend of the moment (and I live for it, because it means we can stay in bed for another half hour every morning).
Yes, it’s really called that – but hold on before you judge
Let’s set one thing straight: yes, the name ‘depressed hair’ raises eyebrows – and rightly so. But it’s not about romanticizing depression. It’s about expressing a mood, through your hair – and yes, it can be delightfully messy. Just like sometimes you wear a sweater that’s two sizes too big because you want to hide for a bit, or you put on bright red lipstick to cheer yourself up, your hair is just a way to say: this is how I feel today.
But… can we really call it that? That question also came up in the comments of a post by @lahamag, where the comments exploded. Someone wrote: “It’s a huge disrespect for people who are not with us anymore, and those who are struggling against this awful disease.” And yes, that comment got almost 600 likes.

Okay, maybe the name isn’t the most sensitive choice. But the idea behind it – a look that finds its roots in subcultures like punk and emo – is less superficial than it seems. The message? Perfect doesn’t always have to be. And honestly, my sleep rhythm would only get happier with this trend.
Messy = fashion: why this hairstyle is so in right now
Well: we’re all slowly getting tired… Tired of perfection (me too). Of the image that we always have to be “on.” And so we’re increasingly opting for looks that go against that. Not necessarily as a statement, but as a kind of relief. You don’t have to blow-dry your hair until it shines or curl it five times a week until it looks like your real hair. That slight frizz, that messy bun or that strand that won’t cooperate? That’s what makes it cool. I’m IN!
Imperfect, but with a little effort
Okay okay, you don’t just get that perfect imperfect hair. At least: you can step out of bed and think: yes, this is it – but some people just have must be sleek. hair. Okay, were you born lucky (jealous), this is how you join the messy hair trend.
- Use a sea salt spray or texturizing mousse to create grip: Here you can read more about sea salt spray.
- Blow-dry with your head down and optionally curl a few random strands.
- Finish off with a hair accessory that looks like you found it randomly on the floor (but in silk or velvet, you know: here you find the cutest).
- And: don’t brush it. Really don’t. You can shake it, scrunch, but that brush stays in the drawer (DON’T DO IT).
Checklist: Is depressed hair something for you? (Spoiler: probably yes)
- You find at least 20 extra minutes of sleep more important than blow-drying and styling
- You want to unlearn that styling and start your healthy hair journey
- You’ve ever thought: “My hair is the mood”
- You can be ‘accidentally cool’ (think: trench coat + messy hair = Paris)
We already saw it at PRADA
If you think that depressed hair just came out of nowhere: think again. It already appeared on the runway: During the Fall/Winter 2025 show of Prada, we already saw the messy hair look: Models with hair as if they just got out of bed – but with a Prada dress on (mood). Frizzy, messy, loosely tied buns, and for some, the hair was even stuck in chains (yes really). As if they decided halfway through their morning routine: never mind, this is enough.
According to designers Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, the show was about letting go of those old-fashioned, rigid notions of femininity. Their message? Not everything has to be smooth, shiny, and perfect. Sometimes it can be messy, emotional, and unfiltered. And so can your hair.
Hairstylist Guido Palau – king of the controlled chaos hairstyle – created a unique mix of texture, frizz, and ‘oops, forgot to brush’-vibes. TikTokker @ly.as0 filmed it backstage, and his video with wild hair looks went viral with comments like: “Not to brag, but I always wake up like this.”
In short: if even Prada says that uncombed hair is the new sexy, then we never have to regret skipping the brush. You’re welcome babe.
