Mr. & Mrs. Murder: the affair that led to murder

By

What amazes me the most in true crime documentaries is how some cases remain unsolved for years. How perpetrators can walk around with their secret all that time; especially when you see the despair growing among the relatives. The new Disney+ documentary ‘Mr. & Mrs. Murder’ raised those same questions. There had always been suspicions about the murderer, but it was only after 17 years that the gruesome truth finally came to light.

The mysterious disappearance of Mike Williams

Denise, Mike, Brian, and Kathy meet each other in high school. The four form a close bond and eventually even two couples. Denise marries Mike and Kathy marries Brian. Even after their college years, they remain friends. On December 16, 2000, the men go hunting at Lake Seminole near their hometown Tallahassee in Florida. Something they both did more often and regularly together. But this time they are gone for a very long time. Brian returns around noon and claims to have been out alone that morning; there is no trace of Mike.

The police start searching and quickly find his car and boat by the lake. It is not until six months later that his clothes and hunting license are also found. His body remains missing and the police assume that Mike drowned and was later eaten by alligators. In the summer of 2001, he is officially declared dead. Yet the case does not feel resolved. Of the slightly more than 100 people who have ever drowned in the lake, Mike is the only one whose body has not been found. Something is not right here.

Some relatives behave suspiciously

Although several family members did not want to believe that Mike had died this way, Denise seemed to have less trouble with it. She was actually the one who insisted on his official death declaration. That meant she was entitled to his life insurance, an amount of over a million dollars. Also notable: it was Brian who sold this insurance to Mike. All of this did not go unnoticed by Kathy. When her husband turned out to have an affair with Denise, all alarm bells went off. They needed to know more about what really happened. Mike's mother also has her doubts and refuses to give up. She spread photos of her son, stood with signs along the road, and kept asking for attention for the case. Because of this and the help of journalists, the investigation was eventually reopened. And although it was a slow process, it was ultimately Kathy who provided important breakthroughs.

The undercover mission

Kathy was determined to get clarity. She felt betrayed and Mike was also her best friend. Together with the police, she worked towards a clear goal: to drive Brian and Denise, who were now married, apart; hoping that one of the two would turn on the other. It ultimately took years of building trust, wiretapped phone calls, and meetings. But the breaking point was getting closer.

The truth comes to light

In 2016, Brian and Denise's relationship was deteriorating. The two had not been in contact for a while, and Brian especially struggled with that. In desperation, he hid in Denise's car and tried to threaten her with a weapon to kidnap her. She managed to escape and called the police. Brian was arrested. A life sentence now hung over his head, making him vulnerable. The signal for the police to also push forward in Mike's case. They made a deal: Brian would avoid the heavy sentence and get immunity regarding the disappearance. For that, his information had to lead to a perpetrator or Mike's body. Brian had no choice but to confess that he had murdered his best friend, and that Denise was involved in the plan. It all had to do with their affair. According to him, they were Bonnie and Clyde, partners in crime. Denise was also arrested.

Where are Brian and Denise now?

Thanks to his deal, Brian was never convicted of Mike's murder. He received a 20-year prison sentence for attempted armed kidnapping and will be released in 2036. Denise was charged with premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit premeditated murder, and complicity. This resulted in a life sentence for her. On appeal, that was adjusted. The murder charge was dropped and her sentence was adjusted to 30 years. She will be released in 2046. Although Brian and Denise are both incarcerated, no one has officially been convicted of Mike's murder.

The goal behind Mr. & Mrs. Murder

Various police officers and relatives speak in the documentary. But especially Kathy's story is central. She had a clear reason for wanting to share this. “I feel like there are still some puzzle pieces missing. I feel like Brian and Denise have somehow been protected all these years.” With this docuseries, Kathy hopes that anyone who knows more about the case will come forward. So that hopefully after nearly 25 years, all questions will finally be answered. ‘Mr. & Mrs. Murder’ is now available on Disney+.
