Hello Cloud Dancer: this is the Pantone color of 2026

Now that we are sinking deeper into December, it is time to Mocha Mousse leave behind and look forward to the new year – and thus also the very latest Pantone color. Because yes: a new one has been chosen again. And this one? It might surprise you. It is actually Cloud Dancer, which replaces the light brown color of the throne. This new white neutral tone will be the figurehead of 2026, but why was it actually chosen? And who chooses this color? Why is it not butter yellow, purple, or Elphaba green? All those pressing questions we will find out for you, because this is not just about a color on the wall, but also your fashion choices, nail trends, and so much more.
Why was this specific color chosen?
That Cloud Dancer may already feel like a fresh breeze, and I understand that. The soft cloud-like color was chosen because it should give you peace amidst all the hustle and bustle of this busy world. According to Pantone this color is the manifestation of the urge to return to basics: “We seek fulfillment by choosing a calmer, less hectic life and serenity for a lightness of existence.”
Does that sound a bit… airy? Mmm, I get you, but it is well-intentioned. After the coronavirus pandemic, we have started to value our personal lives more. Just think of office staff working from home several days a week and the fact that there is a provision for paid paternity leave. Yes: the world is changing, so colors are part of that. This white color represents who we are inside. Not the always high-performing girl in a blue glitter dress and high heels, but just you without makeup sitting on the couch in your pajamas. She is enough too. “The color is a symbol of that calming influence on society.” So that white should bring us all some peace. So it’s not such a strange choice after all, right? Although those bright colors are very nice, I understand the choice to opt for something more grounding. “We are looking for a new way of living and wondering how we will start.” This is ‘the starting point’.

Whether everyone supports this color is the question. Because honestly? There is a lot of criticism about it. There are people who find this a ‘tone-deaf’ choice in our current political climate. But Pantone’s president Sky Kelley does not agree: “We knew this would be controversial. The power of the Color of the Year is that it sparks a conversation. We do not dictate that conversation, we facilitate it.”
And who actually chooses ‘the color of 2026’?
Yes, I was wondering that too. Why does a paint company choose the color of the new year and not the fashion world? That is at least an industry where you really see the color reflected in practice, right? Well, first of all, Pantone is not just a ‘paint company’. These are the people who have brought a universal color coding system to the world that everyone can use. It started a kind of ‘color revolution’ at a time (aka 1963) when everything was quite all over the place. The Pantone color system was a way of communicating through colors that every artist, fashion designer, and furniture maker could understand. As a result, everyone has taken it and actually everyone still uses it.
Secondly, it is really not the case that a new color was chosen unanimously in just one meeting with a few people. They really do their research. A global team looks at all kinds of new techniques, how social values are in the world, art collections, popular holiday destinations, and the mood in the world. All of this influences what color we need. Should we get a calming color? Or rather a motivating neon shade? There are really a lot of smart heads involved, and they also consult with experts. They spoke with clothing designers, media creators, artists, photographers, and other makers to choose the right color. They see Cloud Dancer as a comforting blank canvas where you can unleash all your creativity, hope, and dreams.
Where will we see Cloud Dancer reflected?
The Color of the Year is not only seen in the paint you use for your walls. It is almost everywhere. In those white Pinterest-like interiors you see everywhere, in the Hailey Bieber Glaze Donut nails, and of course also on all the catwalks:
1. Interior
I don’t know if it’s just my homepage, but I’ve been seeing this style everywhere lately. It can’t be helped that we will see Cloud Dancer in a lot of interior inspiration. In a statement sofa, for example, which you brighten up with colored cushions or as paint on the wall to create a calm home base next to that green sofa and paintings. It can all be done with this color, because you can combine it with almost anything.
2. In beauty
You can’t escape this color. The 90s are back in the makeup trend that will flood the world: shimmery, frosty eyeshadow. Whether you’re talking about this winter look or Zara Larsson’s rebrand: an extremely white touch, for example in the inner corner of your eye, is popular.
And those nails, wow. Whether you do it with those trendy polka dots, entirely, or as a glazed donut, I’m sure we will see these a lot. It’s such a neutral color that suits everyone. Especially in these cold days.
3. In fashion
If there is one category where this color will shine, it is in fashion – because we have really seen this white color and variations of it a lot on the catwalks. The spring/summer 2026 collections were flooded with this shade. For example, here at Dior, Freya Dalsjo, Alberta Ferretti, Coperni, Ferrari, and Ralph Lauren.

And it didn’t stop there, you know. Cloud Dancer also paraded at Christian Dior, Alberto Zambelli, Alaïa, Simone Rocha, Ashlyn, Celine, McQueen, Schiaparelli, Bottega Veneta, and Balenciaga in the show. Those are almost all the big names, so it was actually no secret that this color would somehow come into our lives next year. Whether it’s through Pantone or the fashion industry.
So yes: get ready, you will see this calming white shade everywhere. So quickly buy a long white coat, fuzzy scarf, or try that white eyeshadow. You might as well stay ahead of the trends, right? Exactly.
