According to experts, this is the best way to apply perfume

For years, I seem to have been applying my perfume incorrectly. It all sounds so easy: just take off the cap and spray. But unfortunately, there are indeed tips that can help your favorite perfume last longer, the scent linger more, and also mistakes to avoid – like ruining your clothes or not applying the scent properly. I've gathered the tips for you so that you can really get the most out of that slightly too expensive perfume. Here they come:

1. Start with a hydrated skin
A good start is half the battle: apply your perfume on clean, hydrated skin. Right after showering is ideal, as your pores absorb the scent best then. Even better: by first applying an unscented body lotion to your skin and then your perfume or petroleum jelly on the specific spots where you will apply the perfume, your scent will really stay put.

2. Focus on the right spots
You’ve probably heard of ‘pulse points’ – these are spots on your body where the blood vessels are close to the skin. Think of your wrists, neck, behind the ears, and the inside of your elbows. The warmth in these areas gradually releases the scent, as if you are a natural perfume diffuser.

3. Do not rub
We all do it: spraying perfume on your wrists and then rubbing them together. We should stop doing this. It breaks the scent molecules, causing your perfume to fade faster; just let it dry is the best option.

4. Your clothes
Do you want your scent to linger even longer? Spray a light mist over your clothes. Do keep in mind: some perfumes can leave stains on fabrics like silk, and we certainly don’t want that. So check the label of your garment before you start. (This also applies when applying to your skin while already wearing clothes, so be careful; before you know it, your top could end up at the dry cleaners).

5. Spray your hairbrush
Do you want to subtly scent your hair? Spray your hairbrush instead of directly on your hair. This way, you distribute the scent evenly and prevent the alcohol in the perfume from drying out your hair. A special hair perfume is of course even better, but unfortunately, that’s not standard in a collection.

6. Less is more
A good perfume doesn’t need to be applied in liters; it should be subtle. Nothing is worse than a cloud of perfume when you walk past someone. About three sprays is really the maximum.

7. Store it well
We all have that one beautiful bottle we want to show off. One problem; perfume doesn’t like heat and direct sunlight. So store it in a cool, dark place, like in a drawer or a cabinet, so the scent retains its strength longer. Very uninviting, but best for long-term quality. It’s also handy to close the bottle as quickly as possible to minimize oxygen exposure, as this can cause your perfume to oxidize faster, and you don’t want that. This way, you can enjoy your perfume for years.

8. A mistake I find myself absolutely guilty of; spraying it in the air and walking through it.
No idea why I actually do this, but I often catch myself: spraying perfume in the air and walking through it so that the perfume is evenly distributed everywhere. But this – apparently quite old-school method – actually works counterproductively. This way, your perfume disappears into the air and barely adheres to your skin or clothes. Perfume is not a magnet that suddenly sticks to you, but a mist. So don’t do it anymore.
