1999: this was the year of crop tops, low-rise jeans, and the wedding of Victoria and David Beckham. After 26 long years and four children, the two are still as happy as ever, but how do they manage to keep that going with each other? In a time when it seems everyone is replacing each other as if they were clothing items, the two prove that true love still exists. What is their secret? Just pay attention, you can learn something from this.

How the fairytale all began

The singer and the football player met in 1997 when Victoria came to watch a football match. David said ‘hi’ from the other side of the room, and that was it. When she left, he thought his chances were gone. But still, just like in his career, he scored: a week later she was back and gave her number on a train ticket. “It was completely love at first sight,” she told ELLE. “David later told me that when he got home after our meeting, he wrote my phone number on so many things – just in case he lost it.” How cute. He thought she was amazing, and she thought the same of him, because soon they were very much in love. They kept that pace, because after a few months they were already engaged in January 1998.

In the summer of 1999, it finally happened: they said their vows in a castle in Dublin. (In a fantastic Vera Wang dress that I secretly dream of.) To this day, they look back on it with fond memories. Like last year, when Victoria posted a throwback about the last days before their wedding. Here, love radiates, from trying on thrones (because yes, who doesn't sit on a throne when they get married?) to writing their vows.

After Victoria finished singing with the Spice Girls, she followed David wherever he went. To Real Madrid, AC Milan, Manchester United – you name it, and she followed, with the kids of course: Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper.

So what is the secret behind this 26-year marriage?

Now that Hollywood has fifty weddings per person and is in messy divorces, it’s almost a miracle that this duo is still together. And it’s not like everything was always peachy; in 2004, his former assistant leaked that they had an affair when he was playing in Real Madrid. He denied it, and Victoria believed him immediately, but it was a tough time. She mentioned this earlier in his documentary series Beckham. “It felt like the whole world was against us, while we were also facing each other. At first, it was always us two against the world, but in Spain, it felt like we didn’t have each other either. That was so sad.” They decided to fight for each other and their family.

They learned from that catastrophe, because from there it only got better and better. By truly investing time in each other and themselves, they developed into better people together. That is one of the most important things in a relationship, according to Victoria: “Often in relationships, one says to the other: ‘You’ve changed.’ Yes, of course. You are a completely different person at 20 than you are at 50.” Our fashion designer is absolutely right about that. You continuously learn in life, so it’s not strange that your personality evolves. You realize what you actually don’t like, and what you prefer instead. Maybe you weren’t really into sports, but over the years you’ve become a fitness guru. That’s why Victoria and David are still so ‘strong’: they accept each other and grow together. In good times and bad haircuts, because there, eh, David has had plenty of those.

“He believed in me when many people didn’t. He invested in me. Sometimes I was the laughingstock in the room; people didn’t take my business seriously. But David? He always believed in me.” That is the other factor in their marriage: because they trust each other, and especially support each other, they continue to love one another. Don’t you also want someone who just supports you? Someone who always laughs at your silly jokes, and doesn’t find it weird when you come up with some new idea. Someone who keeps an eye on your vegetable garden for you, and yes: just thinks of you. And keep surprising each other – you have to keep it a little fun, right?.

That is the secret of Victoria and David, for six – and – twenty – years. Wow. What an end. That’s just more than half a century.
