TikTok is under the spell of snack trays

My TikTok algorithm currently consists largely of videos about food. Among all the recipes and restaurant tips, another trend has sneaked onto my For You Page: the snack boxes. Where we used to crawl onto the couch with one, okay maybe two, bags of chips, we now collect all our favorite snacks in one box. It may sound like it's mostly unhealthy, but according to dietitians, that's not the case. With a little attention, you can actually give this food trend a very positive twist.
Snacking without guilt
Although a bag of chips or a whole tub of ice cream is very tasty, you might feel a bit down afterwards. You might be full, but really healthy it wasn't. With a snack box, you can approach that differently. The idea is to mainly include a variety of treats in your bowl; all those different products also contain different nutrients. While you enjoy a piece of strawberry, some nuts, and a cracker with brie, you're immediately getting a lot from the Schijf van Vijf. If you notice that you miss that variety on a normal day and forget a certain group of food items, you can nicely supplement that with your snack box. This way, you can enjoy and also work on your health at the same time; quite a win-win situation, right?
This is how a snack box works as an energy boost
Sometimes you have those random moments in a day when your energy suddenly drops. Maybe you have a dip after a long workday, or after an intense workout. To perk yourself up again, you could of course eat a whole chocolate bar; all that sugar will definitely get you out of the dip. But here too, a snack box can be a somewhat healthier choice. By eating sweet strawberries, for example, you also get carbohydrates. Your energy will gradually increase, instead of you quickly getting tired again after a short sugar rush. What cubes of cheese or nuts do in your box can help you hold onto your new energy a bit longer. By ensuring a lot of variety in your snacks, you also get different vitamins and minerals that all help your body. This way, you can tackle the rest of your day again.
Snack choice stress is a thing of the past
For someone with choice stress choosing a snack can sometimes be quite a challenge. Are you more in the mood for something sweet or something savory? And once that decision is made, what are you going to eat? With a snack box, that problem at least becomes a lot smaller; although you still have to choose. Throwing all your pantry items together isn't really the intention, but picking out a few things is certainly possible. Another advantage: you can make a different box each time, matching what you feel like that day. It sounds cliché, but the possibilities are truly endless. There are already plenty of videos on TikTok for inspiration.
What do you put in a snack box? You want to try these combinations
To help you a little and to prevent you from wandering around on TikTok for hours, here are a few options to fill your snack boxes. Some may be a bit healthier than others, but you should also be able to treat yourself every now and then.
1. A sweet box
If you really want to give in to your cravings, you can make a sweet snack box. Think of mini stroopwafels, chocolate cubes, and marshmallows. Extra tip: if you melt some of your chocolate, you can dip cookies and other sweets in it.
2. A fruity snack box
To make your box sweet but still healthy, fruit is the ideal option. Strawberries, melon, grapes, or peach. Especially around summer, you can make all sorts of refreshing combinations. Perfect for your afternoon at the beach or by the pool.
3. Vegetable dips
Another healthier but still tasty option: a box with vegetables and dips. Cut cucumber, carrots, or bell peppers into strips and make your favorite dressing; buying it is of course allowed too. This way, it feels a bit like a fancy evening of snacking while taking good care of yourself.
4. A charcuterie box
For all savory snack lovers, a charcuterie box is the perfect option. You can fill it with all kinds of meats, cheeses, crackers, and olives. Essentially, you're making a mini charcuterie board. To treat yourself a little more, it's of course lovely to pour a glass wine to go with it.
5. Asian style
Do you want to try something different or are you already a regular at the Asian store? Then try a snack box in Asian style. For snacks, you can choose dumplings, jelly pudding, or the viral mochi; the latter also comes in an ice cream variant, and they are really delicious.
6. The classic bittergarnituur
Not in the mood for an experiment and just want a classic? Then a bittergarnituur never disappoints. Also a variant for when you really feel like going all out. With mini frikandelletjes, cheese sticks, chicken nuggets, and bitterballen, you can make your movie night even cozier; the sauces shouldn't be missing either. Maybe not the go-to option for a weekday, but perfect for a weekend with friends.
