Perfect weekend getaway in Maastricht: all my tips

Delicious: Pentecost is just around the corner and that means – yes – an extra day off. And if you have a long weekend anyway, why not turn it into a mini-getaway? My favorite holiday city in my own country? That would definitely be Maastricht. Two months ago I was there for the first time and I actually didn't want to leave. Really a case of why am I not living here yet.
The city feels like a holiday destination in itself, it's so beautiful. Do you also have nice weather? Then you are doubly lucky: the city is really at its best.
The journey to Maastricht: car or public transport?
Friday after work: pack your suitcase, sunglasses on your nose, go. Whether you come by train or just take the car – you'll be in Maastricht in no time. Small tip: you can leave the car parked afterwards, because on foot or by bus you can really get everywhere in this city. Are you taking public transport? Book your train tickets on time. Early bird discount = more money left for pie and wine. The price? That naturally depends on where you come from, but the earlier you book, the better.

Where will you sleep this weekend?
I stayed two months ago in the incredibly beautiful boutique hotel, right in the heart of Maastricht. Check out the hotel here. Seriously: I've rarely had such a stylish place. Spacious rooms, a huge beautiful bathroom, everything clean and the decor? Chic with a touch of classic. The hotel is located in a 14th-century old monastery (extra points for atmosphere), is directly opposite a bus stop (handy!) and is really a recommendation for your Maastricht weekend.
What to do in Maastricht?
Start sporty at the boutique gym
My friend and I were totally in our sporty era and booked a HYROX workout at the boutique gym in the city. And wow – we were impressed. The gym is small but super stylish, the changing rooms are bigger than my Amsterdam apartment and everything – from deodorant to makeup remover – is already ready for you. The trainers? Nice people (and yes, also nice to look at, let me just add that). And if you really want to go all out: book a kickboxing class. Think: a room with cool lights and sweating your heart out – in the best way.

In the mood for relaxation? To the sauna
After such an active day, you definitely deserve some relaxation the next day. At Thermen Maastricht you can enjoy saunas, baths, and mini-retreats all day long. Including a main course or meal salad and – yes – a little gift to take home. Don't skip the infusions, they are truly heavenly.
Cave tour with the kids
Out with kids? Then book the special children's cave tour (for ages 8 to 12). Exciting stories, a flashlight in hand, and a dark maze full of adventure. At the end, they get a coloring page – and you get a happy child. Check out more options for Maastricht with kids here.
But above all: lots of shopping and enjoying terraces
I don't think I need to explain to you how we women do that best. Shopping, strolling, cappuccino here, rosé there – we got this. In the city center of Maastricht, you'll find more than enough nice shops and the coziest terraces are just – very simply – on the big square. Everything is within walking distance of the boutique hotel - how nice.
You really don't have to plan your entire weekend. Trust me: with a well-filled shopping bag and a sun-drenched terrace, you're already halfway to your perfect mini-getaway.
You must eat here in Maastricht
As a foodie, Maastricht is really a must: Start on Koestraat – you literally stumble over the nice eateries. There are also hidden gems on Grote Gracht. My favorites: La Tranca: for the tastiest tapas and Spanish vibes and Taverna La Vaca: cozy and always good.
Budget tip? Check Social Deal for 3-course menus under 30 euros at various good restaurants. Saves some for an extra cocktail later in the evening;)
The nightlife in Maastricht
Okay, to be honest: during the week you're here among the students. But on the weekend? Then Maastricht is perfect for a fun night out. My bestie – now a full-on local in Maasje – recommended Roto . Cocktails, nice people, music, and an atmosphere that is always good, whether it's busy or not. Absolutely worth trying according to her.
Packing for Maastricht: what should definitely not be missing?
Okay, Maastricht is not Bali, but if you ask me, you can still come stylish and prepared for the day. Therefore: a mini packing list that makes your weekend just that little bit more special.
✔ A trench coat or leather jacket – for that ‘I'm-not-trying-too-hard-but-look-how-good-I-look’ look
✔ Comfortable but nice sneakers – because you're going to walk a lot
✔ A chic dinner dress – you never know if you suddenly end up on a wine bar date
✔ Sunglasses & SPF – Limburg sun = deceptively good
✔ A book or magazine – for that one perfect terrace moment at the Vrijthof
✔ A small bag for the evening – big enough for your lip gloss, ID, and that Social Deal coupon
✔ A sports outfit – because you did book that HYROX class, remember?
