What models we learn from The White Lotus

You are probably, like me, a big fan of the series The White Lotus. More than the content, I eagerly look forward each week to the characters and the choice and styling of their outfits, which, in my opinion, play a leading role and make an important contribution to telling the story.

Costume designer Alex Bovaird is responsible for this. With great taste and empathy, she knows how to combine high-end fashion (Loud Luxury) with vintage and even items from a local tourist market. It’s no wonder that H&M decided to collaborate with her, resulting in a covetable collection of resort wear (much of which is unfortunately already sold out) in both solids and dynamic prints, perfect for a night out or a day by the pool.

No one understands the importance of accessories like Alex. In the series, expensive watches, designer sunglasses, and bags (Parker Posey’s Gucci Bamboo 1947 is flying off the shelves) are all around you. “The choice of a particular model says everything about your personal lifestyle, social status, or the culture you represent,” says the designer.

The same goes for something as frivolous as a beach hat. No longer solely intended as protection against the sun, the hat has now become a serious fashion statement.

What, where, and for whom?

Bold: the floppy model

A hat with a wide brim, usually made of straw or cotton. Besides the functional sun protection, this hat is a sign of confidence and the willingness to stand out. This model is preferably combined with a long, flowy beach dress or tunic.

Casual: the baseball cap

Initially, this timeless model was mainly worn in combination with a sporty look, but now that practically all designers have printed their logo on a cap, it is increasingly worn in contrasting styles. Still, it looks best with jeans or baggy pants and contributes to a sporty, slightly cheeky appearance. Nowadays, the cap is considered a great fashion statement for logo lovers.

Boho: the cowboy model

Characteristic are the slot at the top and the openwork straw design. This model perfectly fits a romantic Ibiza vibe with airy dresses or wide tunics, where floral prints, statement jewelry, and sandals complete the look.

Informal: the bucket model

Inspired by the fisherman's hat, with a rounded top and narrow brim. This model has a relaxed appearance and is not only suitable for the beach but also perfect for the city. The combination possibilities are endless—pants, skirt, dress—as long as you want to project an informal look.

Classic: the Panama hat

A light and airy model made from palm leaves, known for the ease with which it can be folded or rolled up in your bag. The hat has a classic, chic appearance and preferably combines with a preppy style à la Ralph Lauren.

Hippie-chic: the crochet hat

A crocheted bucket model with a narrow brim, often made in multiple colors and sometimes extra adorned with a crocheted flower. A cheerful option for a sunny love & peace summer. The combination possibilities are endless, but don’t make it too busy—contrast with jeans and a simple T-shirt or top works best.

Trendy: the knotted scarf

Fold your scarf diagonally into a triangle and tie the points around your neck. Voilà! This gypsy look is undoubtedly the most popular way to cover your head this summer. Choose a material that isn’t too smooth, so the model stays in place. Perfect for the beach or by the pool to give your swimsuit an extra accent.

Tip:
Add your own touch to a classic beach hat by tying a scarf or ribbon around it.

I wish you a wonderful, sunny summer!
