Why Lola Tung is taking the world by storm

By
A collage of four portraits of actress Lola Tung. On the left, she wears a silver, shimmering halter dress with a deep V-neck, with the Eiffel Tower in the background. Two images in the centre show her wearing a white crop top, patterned low trousers, sunglasses and a poodle. On the right, she is in a dark blue jacket over a checked mini-skirt, with glasses and long hair."

You may know her as Belly from The Summer I Turned Pretty, but Lola Tung is so much more than that. This Gen-Z style icon (bye bye Bella Hadid) is taking the world by storm and you can't ignore it anymore. Then she stars in Royel Otis’ music video, at another moment she steals all the attention during Fashion Week and collaborates with a very big brand. Is there anything she can't do? Keep a close eye on her, because before you know it, she's everywhere.

Very different from her character Belly

Although Belly has a more mature look in season three, she looks almost the same: little makeup (unless she's trying to fit into Jeremiah's perfect picture, oops), and neutral clothing that isn't really challenging. Like the first scene in the new season: she's wearing a long sleeve and a short denim shorts. The simple white sneakers match the whole look: simple, Brandy Melville, clean girl. This is how we often see Belly. The older she gets, the better the clothes become, but it remains calm. No crazy choices, oversized hoodies, and sometimes a green vest when she really wants to be adventurous.

Lola on the other hand? She's a world of difference. Lola may be a bit shy like Belly, but certainly not afraid to choose her own path: from fashion to film and always with that signature ‘I'm not afraid to experiment’ style. She loves to play with all kinds of colors, textures, and designs. Preferably vintage. During her press tour, we already saw her shine in a fabulous purple 2013 Roberto Cavalli dress, a gray 90’s dress that Rachel Green could have worn, a 2000s mini-dress and a big leopard print coat. Her style is the perfect balance between elegance and daring. Like that time she appeared in a 404Studio fuzzy dress ; with those cut outs, black buckles as straps, and a polka dot pantyhose, she drew all the attention. Five days later she stole the show in a Versace gold metal dress during Sabrina Carpenter's VMA Afterparty. Well, would you ever see Belly in such a dress with that super cool belt? Of course not.

From Cousins to... Coach?

Lola has now turned her unique sense of style into a gigantic fashion deal; she has become the face of of Coachtopia. That's an eco-friendly sister of Coach. They make bags from recycled materials left over from all their Tabby’s and Brooklyn Bags. And for those who think these are “boring outlet bags,” they are very wrong. Here you get unique, cool bags and contribute to the environment. Who wouldn't want that? During the press tour, you saw Lola dragging these bags around a lot. Like the ‘Ribbed Coach Script Tank’ or the ‘Alter/Ego Crescent shoulder bag’ ($250) where she is often spotted.

Lola is ready for what comes after summer

This girl can do much more than just play a sad teenager. Although Belly was her first on-screen role, this was certainly not her first acting gig. In elementary school, she already played the tin man in the school musical of The Wizard of Oz and had a role in the production of Little Shop of Horrors. After that, she didn't go to a regular high school. No, the New Yorker studied at the famous LaGuardia School of Performing Arts. Virtually every celeb who has done something in the music or acting industry attended this school (think of Jennifer Aniston, Timothée Chalamet, Al Pacino, Adrien Brody, Nicki Minaj, and Sarah Paulson). And it paid off well, because she even landed a role on Broadway; she played the lead role Eurydice in Hadestown. That's really not a small production, and on Broadway? The theater of the world? She's going to be really busy & booked, mark my words.

We secretly already know that, because she has already wrapped another film. Next year, Forbidden Fruits will be released, a horror film where she stars alongside Lili Reinhart, Victoria Pedretti, Alexandra Shipp, and Emma Chamberlain. This is just her beginning, because she “wants to dip her toes in everything,” she told us last year. Vogue. “I want to explore all kinds of different worlds. I don't know what that will look like exactly, but I'm very excited about it.”

I already know where I'm going to get my fashion inspo from in the coming time. (And rewatch the latest episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty again.)
