Why reading retreats are the ultimate self-care
Or just the perfect girl trip

TikTok now knows quite a few different algorithms; with perhaps one of the biggest being BookTok. We can definitely say: reading is hot. If that isn't clear yet with all those thousands of videos, then the online book clubs of Dua Lipa and Reese Witherspoon will certainly remove any last doubts. This trend also reaches all the travelers among us, who are in need of some extra relaxation. Reading retreats are the new wellness vacation, but also perfect for your next girl trip.
What is a reading retreat?
You won't be surprised, but a reading retreat is a vacation that mainly focuses on a lot of reading. Instead of an intensive hike or days full of sightseeing, you fill your days with books. This can of course be done in your hotel or Airbnb, but also in a nice little park or on the beach; this way you can enjoy relaxation and still take in the surroundings. You can choose a solo retreat and really take some time for yourself, but it’s just as fun to make it a girl trip and share tips and stories together. Want an option that’s a bit in between or a bit more luxurious? Then you can join organized retreats. That also saves you a lot of planning and is a chance to meet fellow book lovers.

This is how a reading retreat works for self-care
The idea of an empty schedule and just a well-filled reading list already sounds wonderful. But according to clinical psychologist Dr. Rebecca Ray, these kinds of wellness trips are also really good for you. A retreat gives you the chance to take a step back from the daily hustle and truly shift down a gear. This can help you reduce your stress and create space in your mind again. By reading a lot during such a retreat, you are taking great care of yourself, according to Ray. “Reading during a retreat is a kind of therapy in itself. It invites calm, curiosity, and reflection. Stories connect us with ourselves and with others, and in that silence, reading can have a deeply nourishing effect.” This way, you really come back recharged from your trip.
The perfect location for a reading retreat
Step one in planning a vacation is determining your destination, and that is exactly the same for a reading retreat. Whether you choose a self-organized trip or one planned for you, you can retreat with your books in many places; except perhaps hectic cities like New York. When determining what will be on your plane ticket, it’s good to think about where you would like to be and where you can truly relax. Is that a small mountain village or rather a town by the coast. The atmosphere of a place and the view you have can also be very decisive in this. Everything must contribute to that relaxation. In terms of accommodation, you can also take that into account. In the autumn and winter, a fireplace often adds that little extra, and in the summer, perhaps a hammock or cozy seating area outside. You will save some money by skipping the hotspots, so investing a little extra in a nice spot is definitely worth it.

Which books do you take with you on your reading retreat?
Anyone who loves reading but doesn’t always get around to it will recognize this: that ever-growing list of books you still want to read. A reading retreat is the moment to finally cross some of those off. It’s extra fun to make a selection that somewhat matches the destination you’ve chosen. If you’re somewhere in a cabin in nature, a mysterious book will enhance the atmosphere. An old and cozy village calls for a historical story. Novels should not be missing at dream locations by the coast; one where you would take your lover next time.
What do you pack for a reading retreat?
At the top of your packing list are of course the books that will make this trip a reading retreat. Many people prefer to have a physical book in their hands and be able to flip through it, but such a stack does take up a lot of space in your suitcase. Therefore, you can also choose an e-reader; just don’t forget to bring your charger, otherwise, you’ll have to cut your trip short. Also, items that help with relaxation are welcome. Think of some chill outfits or your favorite scented candle. For those who like to take notes while reading, a pencil case with some pens and sticky notes can also be prepared. Once at your destination, you can make the first trip to the supermarket to stock up on wine and chocolate, and then really dive into those books.

What you should definitely not do during a reading retreat
Although vacations are generally meant for relaxation, we often set off with a tight travel schedule. Time must be used as efficiently as possible, and no hotspot should be missed. That is not the case with a reading retreat. Make sure not to plan anything and live in the moment. The focus is on reading; whatever else you do will come naturally. If you suddenly feel like going for a walk or swimming, that’s always possible. Don’t make it an obligation; reading a bit more is also okay. Be flexible with your time and try to relax. You really don’t have to read all your books, as long as you find some peace. You will also return from this trip with plenty of stories, but mainly those from your books.
