Do you dream of meeting your soulmate during a ‘meet-cute’ encounter? After watching the insane documentary A Toxic Love Story you might think differently about it. Angela thought she had found her soulmate when she met her future husband Ian at a Starbucks. Within a few months, they were engaged and expecting twins. It seemed so perfect, until a few strange emails turned their whole life upside down. If Netflix can do one thing well, it’s making a documentary series. Grab your popcorn and private detective glasses, because this story gets crazier by the minute.
From a meet-cute to disturbing threats
The story of Angela and Ian starts off very romantically. They marry in no time and soon it turns out Angela is also pregnant. That sounds like the script of a romcom, but this is really a crime documentary. Their early love happiness takes a 180-degree turn when Angela starts receiving emails from someone calling herself ‘Lilith’. The emails start with intimidating threats and escalate to a level that is almost unbelievable: Lilith posts ads online stating that Angela wants to fulfill men’s violent sexual fantasies. The couple doesn’t know this until suddenly all sorts of strange men are standing on their doorstep to make their rape fantasies come true. It spirals out of control to the point where one of the men actually goes on the attack.
Angela and Ian are convinced they know who is behind this: Michelle, Ian’s ex-fiancée. They think she calls herself Lilith because Lilith was the first and rebellious woman of Adam in the Bible. They file a report, request a restraining order, and eventually, Michelle is actually arrested. But that’s not the end of this story. This is just the starting point of the docu that keeps throwing one plot twist after another. As the investigation progresses, detectives begin to doubt. Is Michelle really the perpetrator? Or is there something bigger going on with the couple themselves? Spoiler: nothing in this case is what it seems at first glance.
It is, of course, based on a true story
This documentary didn’t just come out of nowhere. Angela and Ian are real people who experienced this crazy story. The creators delved deep into police files, bodycam footage, interrogations, and the original threatening emails to precisely reconstruct how the case unfolded. The story feels real because it is. That grabs your attention first, but it’s the plot twists that keep you watching. You are continuously led astray. Every time you think you understand who the good guy and who the villain is, the docu turns the tables again. The case is so confusing that you watch with your mouth agape.
And Angela and Ian? They didn’t want to cooperate with the documentary. You can understand why once you’ve seen it. What started as a story about a woman being harassed grows into a web of lies, manipulation, and a lawsuit that dragged on for years. If you love true crime where you can play detective yourself, then this is the series to binge this month. We won’t tell you anything more because you really have to see this story for yourself to believe it.
