Wiekes Knows: 10 bizarre facts about your body

By
Wiekes facts about the body

It's time to take another look at our bodies, because how well do we know them? I can tell you that I did pay pretty good attention to biology during my high school days (well, good enough to drop it with a six average as soon as possible), but these ten dots... I was a bit surprised by that.

1. You only breathe out of one nostril at a time each time
And so that is alternated once in a while, about after a couple of hours. On average, you alternate left and right between forty minutes and four hours. Now you start paying attention, don't you?

2. The average nose produces a cup full of snot every day
I said they were going to be bizarre facts, but with this one: they also get really nasty.

3. The only muscle that never gets tired is your heart
All other muscles do take their rest. Until the heart stops forever at some point, of course. Bizarre, dirty AND grim facts...

4. On average, a person sits on the toilet for a year in their entire life
Time well spent.

5. Talking about toilets: we pee enough to fill an entire bathtub every month
Can you picture it? Yes? Nasty, isn't it?

6. Your weenus feel nothing at all
No, you dirty little mind: your weenus is that piece of skin over your elbow. Just grab it, squeeze it, pull it; you won't feel anything at all. This is because there are very few nerves there. So it is ideal to use as a stress ball.

7. The organ with the most fat in your body is your brain
Whuuut? Really: your brain is made up of 60 per cent fat. Don't worry, you don't need to put your brain on a diet, because this amount is just right. Should it deviate too much from this, you are more likely to suffer from neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's and schizophrenia.

8. Your brain starts working less hard from the age of 24
Euh, pardon me, I'm kind of bummed about that, because I've long since been 24 but I hope to be able to do with my brain for a while yet. They keep on doing it, fortunately, but your cognitive speed goes down by 15 per cent every year, for 15 years. So if you're a little slower on the uptake: it's down to your fat, fat brain.

9. A quarter of all your bones are in your foot
There are no less than 26 bones in there per foot, so 52 in total. Pretty hefty for such a small body part, isn't it?

10. Your fingernails grow three times faster than your toenails
Pfff, lucky too, that would really be nightmare material, long toenails. That slower growth is because less blood is pumped through your toes, as they are further away from your heart than your fingers.
