Dearest gentle reader, as Lady Whistledown would say, the time has finally come. Pull out your finest ball gown and plop down on the couch, because starting today we can binge the first four episodes of Bridgerton season four. This time the focus is on Benedict Bridgerton and his Cinderella-like romance with the maid Sophie. And who knows these and countless other secrets in Mayfair? The women who have been running everything in high society for seasons: Lady Danbury, Queen Charlotte, and Violet Bridgerton. That’s why we spoke with Adjoa Andoh, Golda Rosheuvel, and Ruth Gemmell about all the new ins and outs. From the steamy scenes (and no, not those of Benedict, but someone totally different!) and life lessons that characters learn, to those oh-so-terribly tight costumes – you want to know this.

Every Bridgerton-fan knows that the real power balance of the Ton is determined by these three women. Whether it’s about cleverly deploying our great gossip queen Penelope Bridgerton or other intrigues: they can do it all. That’s why we had to and would speak to this power trio as soon as we heard they were coming to the Netherlands. So off we went: Monday afternoon to the The Pulitzer Hotel, a.k.a. the stage of today. With some healthy excitement, we stepped into the room – and there sat the actresses. Not in a hotel lobby, but in one of the most beautiful suites there is. One with a large, blue painted ceiling that gives you the impression that you just walked into the Sistine Chapel. The warm tea is already ready, because today we are going to discuss all the ’tea’.

A new romance for… who?

On an elegant wooden sofa, surrounded by paintings and light pink flowers, these ladies are taking on our Amayzine Happertje challenge. That is – for those who can’t remember it, or are too young – a paper origami structure in which questions are hidden and folded shut. By choosing a number, a flap is opened and a question appears to be answered. Which answers will see the light, is totally up to them. After Adjoa (Lady Danbury), Golda (Queen Charlotte) and Ruth (Violet Bridgerton) have figured out the happertje, we dive straight into one of the big topics of this season: Violet’s love life. Bridgerton is known for its immense spicy scenes, so of course we want to know who Ruth would want to do such a steamy scene with. Who makes her heart race? She knows immediately: “Daniel Francis.” That’s the actor who plays Marcus Anderson, Lady Danbury’s brother. Golda laughs: “You’ve already had a lot of sexy moments.” Ruth nods: “Exactly. He’s the one I would want to do such a scene with.”

As a true connoisseur, you probably saw this coming. After Violet’s revelation last season, she finally wants to tame that ‘wild garden’ of hers. I don’t blame her. After the death of her husband, mother Bridgerton is after years ready for some love. You know: touch and desire. A lot of desires. And with whom can she better do this than with her crush, Marcus Anderson? I’m curious about the love adventure that will most likely unfold between those two.

Speaking of love; no one can deny that mutual love is one of the biggest themes of the series. First we had Daphne and Simon, then the passionate ‘enemies’ Anthony and Kate, the best friends Colin and Penelope, and of course now Benedict and Sophie. But who is actually the favorite love story of this trio? That question is posed to Ruth when she chooses number one of the happertje. Personally, I go for season two, but Adjoa, Ruth, and Golda unanimously agree: that of Benedict and Sophie. “I love this story between Luke and Yerin’s characters,” says Ruth with a smile. Adjoa jumps in: “I think we both totally agree with you.” Golda adds: “Completely – agree.” So it’s indeed the well-known fairy tale that wins over the other couples.

Character growth is a must this season

Besides romance, there is enough room for personal growth this season. We know all the characters inside and out now. Or at least, that’s what everyone thinks. Although they are not the main focus, our headstrong queen, clever mastermind, and loving mother will delve deeper into their stories this season. New developments that make you think? They are coming. And self-reflection? That is… badly needed. Specifically for Queen Charlotte.

Golda thinks so too, who draws number five – in other words: is there an important lesson your character learns this season. “Yes, there definitely is,” she laughs. Her character lives for the high season that is coming up again. Meanwhile, we know that she does everything (and I mean everything, including ruining lives and creating drama) just to be entertained. She wants to do what’s possible to forget her private circumstances with King George and her children. This season she thinks she finally has the gossip under control, with Penelope’s help, but nothing could be further from the truth and she’s going to learn that too. Especially now that Lady Danbury, her dearest friend and confidante, announces some annoying news, Golda explains: “I think Queen Charlotte hears a lot now, but never actually really listens to what is being said.” After this answer, Ruth immediately starts laughing. She clearly agrees with this. “So, I think she learns to listen well this season,” Golda continues. Next to her, Adjoa nods in agreement: “That’s so touching.”

The power of the kingdom hurts (especially your ribs)

As if emotional growth isn’t enough, you also have super tight costumes in which you have to act like a star. Because no matter how elegant everything looks on screen, it’s rarely truly comfortable. This conversation cannot end without a glimpse into those suffocating clothes. I’ll be honest: when I see all those beautiful dresses, I really want to wear them. Just imagine: walking through beautiful parks in such a big dress, covered in flowers. Your hair in curls while you fan yourself with a fan for some fresh air. Sounds fun, right? Well, let me burst your bubble, because according to Golda, that is definitely not the case.

She wears the biggest and mainly heaviest costumes as Queen Charlotte. If you thought an Amazon corset already requires a lot of tightening, then these dresses win that competition. The Bridgerton corsets with all those strings are really next level. “They are actually all so uncomfortable. I think that’s because we are not used to wearing double corsets in this time.” Someone who does understand this is Adjoa: “Yes, you are always squeezed into double corsets. Especially those are really terrible.” Golda laughs loudly. “Wearing those costumes for such a long time is really… Intense. I work out a lot to prepare my body to turn for nine months. I’m doing that right now too, to carry the weight of Queen Charlotte again.” So no, dear readers: it’s really not fun to look that beautiful.

What started as a cozy conversation in a hotel suite will end for us just on the couch. With tea in hand and a large portion of drama in Mayfair. Because if this season is as sharp and playful as these three women, then I’m sold.

The last four episodes of Bridgerton season 4 will be available from February 26. So mark that day on your calendar, trust me.
