Everything about Bruno Mars: age, girlfriend, origin, and live shows

Maybe you were there too, I definitely was, last week: Bruno Mars at the Ziggo Dome. Bruno had been at the top of my wishlist of artists to see for a while. With hits like Just the Way You Are, Grenade, Locked Out of Heaven, 24K Magic and Uptown Funk Bruno has been among the absolute world elite for over fifteen years.

My interest in Bruno has been there for a long time, but it seems his popularity has only been growing lately. With his new tour, we suddenly want to know even more, namely: his age, girlfriend, background, and private life.

Because who is Bruno Mars actually? Where does he come from? Does he have a girlfriend? And why do so many music lovers perhaps call him the best live artist of this generation? I looked it all up for you.

How old is Bruno Mars?

Bruno Mars was born on October 8, 1985, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is currently 40 years old and will turn 41 in October 2026.

What is really striking is that despite his long career, he has released relatively few albums. Just four in total: Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010), Unorthodox Jukebox (2012), 24K Magic (2016) and The Romantic (2026). So that's only four in sixteen years. Bruno clearly takes more time for his music; the perfectionist prefers to release one perfect album rather than three mediocre ones.

By the way, in 2021, together with Anderson .Paak, he also released an album under the name An Evening with Silk Sonic with the amazing hit Leave the Door Open.

Bruno Mars is actually not named Bruno Mars at all

Joe joe. His real name is Peter Gene Hernandez. He got the nickname Bruno as a toddler from his father, who thought he resembled the famous wrestler Bruno Sammartino. He later came up with the name Mars himself because people often said he looked “from another planet.” Okay…

Where does Bruno Mars come from?

I find this so fun: Bruno Mars was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. But his roots lie in multiple places around the world.

His mother was from the Philippines and worked as a singer and hula dancer. His father has Puerto Rican and Jewish roots and was a percussionist. So music was not just a hobby at home, but simply part of the family's daily life.

From the age of four, Bruno was on stage almost every night in the family show in Waikiki. Dressed as the cutest little imitation of Elvis Presley, he stood there for tourists. That might explain why a sold-out stadium doesn't make Bruno nervous at all.

Does Bruno Mars have a girlfriend?

He knows how to stay out of the spotlight, so I had to look it up too. But it turns out: for years he formed one of the most stable couples in the entertainment world. Since 2011, he had been in a relationship with model and actress Jessica Caban.

The two consciously kept their private life out of the limelight. No red carpets, paparazzi, and love updates on Instagram? They hardly participated in that.

But in 2025 it turned out that the relationship had ended after more than thirteen years. Since then, no new relationship has been officially confirmed.

So cool and typical of Bruno Mars, because in a time when almost all celebrities share their entire lives on social media, he actually lets his music speak for itself.

Why is Bruno Mars so good live?

Well, I think everyone who has been to the Ziggo knows why: the man can DO EVERYTHING. What a genius artist. It's crazy how well he can sing, dance, play musical instruments, and how funny he is. But especially his timing is brilliant.

I come from the generation of Prince, whom I have seen perform live very often. But if you ask me who the best live artist of this moment is, it is undoubtedly Bruno Mars. It's not just because of all his hits, but especially because of the way he performs.

He really sings live

Okay, here comes my greatest admiration. Because in a time when many stadium concerts use backing tracks, Bruno Mars is known for his pure live singing. Okay, supported by background vocals and technical support of course. But his main voice is live.

You can hear and feel that. No performance by Bruno sounds exactly the same.

He is so much more than just a singer

Bruno Mars plays piano, guitar, drums, bass, and various other instruments. On his albums, he plays many parts himself. During concerts, he effortlessly switches between singing, dancing, and making music.

And that combination is rarely seen among major pop artists.

His band consists mainly of friends

So fun, because behind Bruno Mars is not just a hired backing band. The Hooligans have been a close-knit group of musicians for years. His brother Eric Hernandez is even the drummer of the band.

You can really feel that on stage. Everything feels like a big party, very relaxed, as if a large group of friends is making music together. The musicality literally shines through. Everything, everything, everything is perfect: every note, dance step, and transition is perfectly put together down to the smallest details.

He is an extreme perfectionist

This makes Bruno who he is, because behind the relaxed appearance, he turns out to be the greatest perfectionist of all time. Artists who work with Bruno Mars say that he can spend hours on one vocal line, a horn part, or even one word in a song.

As a result, he also releases new music less often than many colleagues. Only when everything feels just right is a song finished.

You can also see this perfectionist attitude during his concerts. Everything is right: from the lighting to the choreography and the timing of the band. Everything seems effortless, but behind that obviousness lies hundreds of hours of preparation.

The reviews are almost unanimously positive

I looked for reviews about the Romantic Tour. Almost everyone praises his live singing, his energy, his musicality, and his stage presence.

Even critics who are less enthusiastic about his latest music write that Bruno Mars is hardly surpassed live. His concerts are described as two hours of non-stop entertainment where funk, soul, pop, and pure showmanship come together.

And what about those alleged gambling debts?

Maybe you've also read those stories that Bruno Mars supposedly accumulated tens of millions of dollars in gambling debt in Las Vegas.

Those rumors spread around the world in 2024. But MGM Resorts, the casino company Bruno collaborates with, denied those stories almost immediately. According to the company, there has never been any talk of huge debts, and Bruno is actually a valued partner.

What is true is that Bruno Mars once said he used to play poker enthusiastically. But there has never been any hard evidence for the spectacular amounts circulating online.

10 surprising facts about Bruno Mars

Why Bruno Mars is so cool and remains so

Bruno Mars doesn't need to appear on Instagram daily. He gives few interviews, releases relatively few albums, and keeps his private life carefully shielded.

Yet every time he releases new music or announces a tour, he becomes a topic of conversation again.

And as soon as he steps on stage, most visitors immediately understand why.

He sings live. He plays instruments. He dances. He entertains. And he seems only satisfied when everything is truly perfect.

So: if you ever get the chance to see Bruno perform, please take it. It's so worth it.
