Getting electrolytes without expensive powders: this is the easy way

You see them everywhere these days: electrolyte powders, trendy supplements, and fancy water bottles that promise to elevate your sports performance. That’s true, but it can get quite expensive. But to be honest? It doesn’t have to be that complicated and costly.
Because those who love to exercise, move a lot, or notice they lose quite a bit of fluid on warm days have probably heard of electrolytes. And there’s good news for anyone who doesn’t want to spend dozens of euros on powders and supplements: you can just check the supermarket. There you can find electrolytes and other water drinks for a much smaller amount.
But what exactly are electrolytes, when do you need them, and is such a bottle a handy addition to your sports routine? I’ll explain it for you.

What are electrolytes actually?
Just a mini biology lesson: electrolytes are minerals and salts that your body needs to function properly. Think of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. They play a role in your fluid balance, muscle function, and transmitting signals through your nerves.
You get them through your daily diet. Think of vegetables, fruits, dairy, and nuts. You also lose electrolytes while sweating, especially sodium and chloride. That’s why sports drinks with electrolytes can be very handy when you exercise for a long time and intensely or are simply someone who sweats a lot.
Does that mean you need a special electrolyte drink right after every Pilates class ? No way. For most people, water and a normal, varied diet are more than sufficient. Especially during prolonged exertion, extra fluids, salts, and sometimes carbohydrates can be useful.
Electrolyte water just from the supermarket
Don’t feel like measuring out powder packets, ordering supplements, or making a complicated sports drink? Then a ready-made drink from the supermarket is of course an easy option.
Electrolyte water is sometimes also called O2 water. Similar water drinks with electrolytes can be found in the supermarket assortment. For example, Active O2 at Albert Heijn is listed for about €1.49 per 500-milliliter bottle. My favorite is the one from Lidl, which is even cheaper (€1.49 per liter) and I always throw it in with my weekly groceries. That makes it a pretty easy choice if you’re on the go, want to take a bottle to the gym, or simply seek a bit of extra variety alongside your regular water bottle.

Why drinking enough is so important when you exercise
Whether you’re going for a run, taking a spinning class, or enthusiastically doing strength training : drinking enough is important. During exercise, you lose fluids through sweat. If you don’t adequately replenish that loss, dehydration can affect your performance and you may feel less fit.
A few benefits of drinking enough listed.
- You support your fluid balance. Your body needs fluids to function well, both during exercise and outside of it.
- You help regulate your body temperature. Especially on warm days or during intense workouts, you lose more fluids.
- You support your muscles and nerves. Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium play an important role in this.
- You can replenish your fluid loss after sweating. For a short, easy workout, water is usually sufficient. During prolonged, intense exertion, a drink with electrolytes or carbohydrates can be handy.
And no, more electrolytes doesn’t automatically mean more energy, less muscle soreness, or better sports performance. It’s mainly about what your body actually needs.
This is how you easily get enough electrolytes
It really doesn’t have to be complicated. With a few simple habits, you can already make great progress.
1. Drink enough water. For a regular workout, water is usually a fine choice. Bring a bottle and drink as needed.
2. Eat varied. Vegetables, fruits, dairy, legumes, and nuts provide different minerals that your body needs.
3. Look at how intense your exercise is. An hour of light movement demands something different from your body than a long running session in the heat. Especially during prolonged exertion and a lot of sweating, electrolytes can be extra useful.
4. Make it easy for yourself. Bringing a bottle of water or a ready-made drink is often more practical than dealing with various powders for every workout. Do choose consciously: do you mainly want fluids, or are you really looking for a drink with added electrolytes?
Do you need to drink electrolytes every day?
I can answer that briefly: no. Electrolytes are important, but that doesn’t mean you need to take them daily as a supplement. Your body usually gets them through food, and your fluid and salt balance is continuously regulated. Especially online, it sometimes seems like you can’t function optimally without electrolytes, but that’s really exaggerated for most people. I’m assuming not everyone reading this wants to become a bodybuilder.
My conclusion? You don’t have to spend a fortune to take good care of your body. Start with drinking enough water and eating varied. If you want to take a ready-made drink to your workout, there are affordable options in the supermarket. And if you’re specifically looking for electrolytes, pay attention to the ingredients rather than just the name on the bottle. Because being healthy can be quite easy.
