Maintaining an even skin tone as you age

Our skin is constantly changing. As the years go by, processes such as collagen loss and reduced cell renewal become increasingly visible. One of the most common skin changes in later life is the appearance of age spots. Although they are completely harmless, many people find them bothersome. Fortunately, there are effective ways to keep your skin even and limit the formation of new spots.

How age spots develop

Age spots, also known as liver spots or lentigo solaris, occur due to an overproduction of melanin. Melanin is the substance that gives the skin its color and protects it from UV radiation. With prolonged or repeated exposure to the sun, melanin production can become disrupted in certain areas, leading to dark spots that are difficult to fade on their own.

This process takes place over years and is accelerated by factors such as sun behavior in younger years, hormonal changes, and genetic predisposition. The spots most often appear on areas that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, décolletage, and forearms. They are not dangerous, but for those who find them cosmetically bothersome, there are effective ways to reduce them and prevent the formation of new spots.

Prevention starts with protection

The most important step in preventing age spots is consistent sun protection. A daily sunscreen with at least SPF 30 protects the skin from UV rays that stimulate melanin production. This applies not only on sunny days but also on cloudy days and in winter when UV radiation is still present. Many people underestimate how much UV radiation reaches the skin even on a gray day.

At L’Oréal Paris, they see that consumers are increasingly opting for day creams with built-in SPF. The counteracting age spots therefore becomes a natural part of the daily routine instead of an extra step. Combine sun protection with a hat or cap during prolonged outdoor stays for optimal protection of the face and décolletage.

Ingredients that help achieve an even complexion

In addition to sun protection, there are active ingredients that can reduce the visibility of existing age spots. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that inhibits melanin production and visibly evens out the complexion. Niacinamide prevents pigment from being transported to the upper layers of the skin while simultaneously strengthening the skin barrier.

Retinol accelerates cell renewal, allowing discolored skin tissue to be replaced more quickly with new, undamaged cells. AHAs such as glycolic acid act as mild chemical exfoliants and contribute to a fresher, more even skin tone. It is advisable to gradually introduce these ingredients into your routine so that your skin has time to adjust without becoming irritated.

An even skin tone is not a matter of luck, but of consistent care. By protecting your skin daily, using the right active ingredients, and being patient with the results, you can effectively limit pigment changes. It's not about perfection, but about having skin that you feel good in. Starting prevention early makes a big difference.
