The cottage from Heated Rivalry can really be visited in Canada
After watching Heated Rivalry, there is one thing that has been lingering in my mind: where is that amazing cottage in Canada where Ilya and Shane stayed? Like me, many have searched for that one luxury wooden house in the Canadian wilderness. Fortunately, we don't have to search long for it: the cottage really exists. And you can sleep there. I want to see the most romantic place from the series, you know. In the middle of the woods, right by a mirror-smooth lake and far enough from the outside world to finally be yourself. It's exactly what Shane and Ilya needed. Only it's not in Quebec as they said in the series, but in Muskoka in Canada. That's a beautiful lake area where you will immediately want to book a flight to.
Where is the cottage from Heated Rivalry?
The house is actually located on the west side of Lake Muskoka, near the towns of Gravenhurst and Bala. This region is about a two-hour drive from Toronto and is known as Canada's ‘cottage country’. Now, that doesn't mean you'll only find small wooden vacation homes with rickety bunk beds. In Muskoka, every house by the water is called a cottage, even if it's a million-dollar home with its own dock. And yes, the cottage where Heated Rivalry the filming actually took place clearly falls into that last category. The Barlochan Cottage is ready for you to sleep in. You can simply book it via Airbnb.
This modern yet secretly cute cottage was built less than six years ago. The cottage has three bedrooms, huge glass walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a large granite fireplace that you immediately recognize from the series. Now you don't have to worry about someone catching you during a thrilling adventure in front of these windows, because you have almost one hundred and twenty meters of private shoreline where no one can dock their boat. You have your own dock and a small beach with a view over the water. Unfortunately, hockey players with hidden feelings are not included in the booking. However, you might spot other celebs here, like Tom Hanks, Cindy Crawford, Steven Spielberg, and Martin Short, who own homes here.

Can you really stay overnight in the cottage?
For a long time, this house was a private residence, but due to the success of the show, it has become an Airbnb. Logical, because everyone wants to experience the same as Shane and Ilya. You enter the house in the well-known living room with a large kitchen. There is also a large recreation room and a fitness room. Perfect if you want to work out for some reason. You can also exercise on the lake, as you can use the canoes and kayaks. If you're not much of a daredevil, you can sit by the fire pit in the evening and relax. Bring a can of tuna for the full series experience, and you'll get pretty close.
What does a stay cost?
But staying here is not really cheap. Prices vary by period, and you can't book for less than seven days. And once you've gathered the courage to stay in the Canadian wilderness for seven days, you also have to pay more than a thousand euros per night (€ 1,648.07 to be exact). You might as well go with a group of six friends than make it a romantic getaway. But waking up in the real cottage of Shane and then looking out over the lake from your bed is probably priceless for a fan.
Muskoka is at least as beautiful as in the series
Even if you don't want to spend thousands of Canadian dollars on a stay in ‘the cottage’, Muskoka is absolutely worth a trip. In another hotel or another Airbnb, though. The region has more than 1600 lakes and consists of dense forests, pink granite rocks, and all sorts of small towns that look like they came straight out of a romantic movie or Sterling Point could come. In the summer, you can swim, sail, canoe, kayak, or sit for hours on a dock while the sun slowly sets. In the fall, you can also disappear into the red forests. That view is really worth a plane ticket.
The nearby village, Gravenhurst, is actually the perfect base to explore the area. From there, you can take a boat trip on Lake Muskoka to sail past all those cottages. Along the water, you'll find restaurants, small shops, and terraces everywhere where, once you sit down, you never want to leave. The other nearby town, Bala, is also worth a visit. This is the cranberry capital of Ontario. There is plenty to see. I can't say no to a tour of such a farm to then enjoy the fresh Canadian air with a nice glass of wine. Besides drinking wine, you can also hike wonderfully in Muskoka. For example, on the Huckleberry Rock Lookout Trail near Bracebridge. Here, after a short climb through the woods, you can reach a lookout point where you can see all the forests.
So we are completely sold on the ‘come to the cottage’ campaign. I might as well start saving to go here next fall. Are you joining?
