This is what you wear in that tricky mid-season

The beginning of a new season is my favorite part of a season. The first rays of sunshine, the leaves changing color, it all still feels new. The only problem is, what do you actually wear in that in-between season, where it can be warm during the day warm but you still need a jacket in the evening. When sandals are a bit too cold and sweaters are still too warm. Just for those days, transitional pieces are the best solution. We’ve lined up the must-haves for late summer/beginning autumn for you.
Transitional jacket
This is of course the most important item that everyone should have in their closet. There are endless possibilities, I prefer to buy a jacket that I can wear over my summer dresses at the end of August, but that I can also wear in the fall. A short trench coat is, in my opinion, the ideal solution. Suede and leather jackets are also perfect for the beginning of fall, especially in neutral and brown tones, as they match with everything.
Slip dress
Slip dresses work perfectly as a transitional piece between seasons. In summer, you wear it on its own, and when it gets a bit colder, it doesn’t have to disappear into the closet. After the series Love Story about Carolyn Bessette and JFK Jr. came out earlier this year, 90s minimalism popped up everywhere again. The slip dress is so popular because you can style it in so many different ways. With heels and jewelry, or just a bit more casual with loafers and sunglasses, like Carolyn did. In late summer, you can throw a jacket or cardigan over it, and in fall and winter, you can wear a turtleneck over it. May also recently showed on Instagram how she styles summer dresses in the fall.
Flowy midi or maxi skirts
Whether you prefer midi or maxi length, if the skirt is flowing and made of light material, you can definitely wear it through different seasons. I wear my satin maxi skirts in both summer and winter, because just like the slip dress, they are easy to combine. From tank tops in summer to long sleeves in fall, there are few things you can’t wear it with.
Boatneck top
The nice thing about a boatneck top is that there is no item in your wardrobe that it doesn’t go with. Jeans, skirts, shorts, I can’t think of any. The slightly wider neckline gives the simple top an elegant look. This is such a basic that everyone should have in their closet.
Ballet flats
In summer, we naturally wear a lot of sandals and in winter it’s too cold for open shoes. That’s why those in-between seasons are perfect for ballerinas. While sneakers keep a jeans look sporty, ballerinas provide a chic effect.
Light knitwear
I always have a light cardigan or sweater in my bag during summer evenings, in case it gets colder in the evening. Because Dutch weather is quite unpredictable, it’s always handy to have an extra layer with you. Thinner cardigans are back this year, and form the perfect transitional piece for the transition to fall.
I’m probably the only one, but I’m already planning my fall wardrobe. While most people don’t want to part with their summer clothes yet, I find fall outfits more fun to style. Luckily, you don’t have to choose: these items form the perfect hybrid between the two styles, and that’s why you’ll enjoy them longer.
