This is why Janice Dickinson is not in the antm doc

By

You know how it is: you turn on the new America’s Next Top Model-docu on Netflix, you see Tyra, Miss J, Jay Manuel, Nigel Barker… and then you think within three minutes: wait a minute, where is Janice Dickinson? Exactly that. And no, it wasn't because someone “forgot” her. According to Netflix Tudum, Janice was not seen in Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model because she was unavailable during the filming. Director Daniel Sivan said they would have loved to interview her, but she was tied up with another documentary. And yes, that’s exactly where it gets interesting.

Because while Netflix is already looking back at the complicated legacy of ANTM, Janice is also coming with her own side of the story, just through a different docuseries. E! announced Dirty Rotten Scandals a series about the dark side of major TV hits, including America’s Next Top Model. And honestly: that’s almost too perfect. Netflix gives you the big retrospective with old faces and reflection, while Janice will come in with the energy of: nice all, but I also have something to say.

Why this is such a good follow-up after the Netflix docu

The Netflix docu Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model is a three-part series and is now available on Netflix. Tudum describes the series as a look back at the complicated legacy of the show, with insiders and old faces, including Tyra Banks. But Janice is of course not just any former judge. She was chaos, TV gold, and uncomfortable honesty in one person. Tudum calls her impact on the early years of ANTM huge, and Nigel Barker also emphasizes how defining she was for the DNA of the show. So if anyone can add an extra layer to the whole what actually happened behind the scenes?-discussion, it’s her.

Important detail: Janice does not necessarily get a full solo portrait on Netflix, but is part of E!’s new docuseries Dirty Rotten Scandals. In that series, Dr. Phil and The Price Is Right will also be featured. The ANTM-focus will be on two consecutive episodes on March 11 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, featuring Janice Dickinson and winner Lisa D’Amato among others. E! also shares that Janice takes a strong shot at ANTM, and let’s just say: subtle is not the word. That promises to be a very different sound than the more retrospective Netflix approach.

Why we are still going to watch this en masse

What makes this topic so good, and also so Amayzine, is that it’s not just about reality TV nostalgia. It’s also about how we now look at shows from the 00s that seemed normal back then, but now suddenly feel very different. And ANTM is perhaps the perfect example of that. The glamour was big, the one-liners iconic, but the aftertaste is, let’s say, mixed. And that’s exactly why this Janice angle is so nice. Not because we come for the chaos alone (okay, a little bit), but because her version of the story will likely start a whole new internet round.

If you’ve already seen the Netflix docu and thought: I’m missing one voice in this story, then this is your next stop. And if you haven’t seen the Netflix docu yet: prepare for a ANTM-rewatch impulse that you didn’t plan. Because one thing is for sure: Janice Dickinson rarely misses a chance to walk into the room with an opinion. And honestly? We’re just going to watch that.
