This is the Greek road trip of Justin and Hailey Bieber

By

After watching The Odyssey I am definitely in a Greek vacation mood, but there was another trip that occupied my mind: that of Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber. Because where are these trendsetters going? They know someone somewhere in the world who knows all the best tips, so if they go somewhere, it must be good. Right? Exactly. That’s why we are now figuring out the couple's vacation for you: where they went and what you can do there to experience the same road trip as the Biebers. Spoiler alert: it’s not Santorini or Mykonos.

Because no, for their family vacation they did not choose an island with white houses and blue doors, but three different places: the agricultural town of Kranidi, the island of Spetses, and Athens.

First stop: Kranidi

That the Peloponnese (where the town of Kranidi is located) is popular with filmmakers is no secret to us anymore. Richard Linklater chose it as the backdrop for his film Before Midnight, just like Christopher Nolan, who used the area around the peninsula as a stage for The Odyssey. But that American celebs go there? That’s news to me. Especially when they choose an agricultural town like Kranidi. With big stars like Hailey and Justin, you expect them to choose luxury yachts in Athens or private villas in Santorini. But yes, they continue to surprise you.

Located in the hills of Agia Anna, among the olive groves, Kranidi is the perfect hide-out for famous people. The town is only two kilometers away from the holiday home of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. Every summer vacation, they stay here for eight weeks among the locals. Did Hailey get her inspiration from there? Who knows, it could be, because Kranidi is really a good vacation spot if you want to forget the whole world for a while. Here you find narrow streets with neoclassical houses and stone walls covered with flowers. You can walk around here without having a plan. Grab an iced coffee somewhere and walk to one of the higher points to look out over the fantastic olive groves.

It seems like not much happens here, but that’s exactly what you need. There are plenty of things to do, such as visiting the Ermionis Honey and Olive Oil Museum, where you learn all about honey and olive oil from the region. Then drive to Lepitsa beach to see the caves of Didyma. Looking for something more active? Take a horseback ride through the olive groves. In the evening, sit down at a restaurant by the water and enjoy your low-key vacation.

Second stop: Spetses

From Kranidi, the Biebers traveled to Spetses. They were spotted by fans and paparazzi on this almost car-free island. This is a place where you can get everywhere on foot, by bike, or by boat. You arrive at Dapia, the harbor of the island. The vacation starts here, because you want to capture this amazing environment right away: mansions, cafes, restaurants, and boats bobbing in the harbor. That screams for an Instagram dump. From Dapia, you walk towards the old harbor, where you encounter traditional shipyards and even more old buildings. This is the Greece where it feels like you are living among the real Greeks.

Did they also go to that old harbor? Or to the Bouboulina Museum? Because that is really a must-see. It is located in the house of the old Greek sea heroine Laskarina Bouboulina. After all the history, you can, just like Justin and Hailey (and little Jack), move to the beach for a good swim. Take the water taxi to beaches outside the center, like Zogeria or Agioi Anargyroi, for the best experience. End your day with fresh fish, saganaki, and wine, and then get ready for a good night out. Because yes, that’s possible here too. Around the old harbor, you have plenty of nice spots for a cocktail. We can’t promise you’ll see Justin and Hailey here, but at least you can pretend to be part of their vacation group.

Third stop: Marina Kallithea in Athens

The last stop takes you to Marina Kallithea, on the coast of Athens. This is not the busy center with lines for the Acropolis and tourists stopping in the middle of the street, but the quieter part of the Athenian Riviera. The marina itself is mainly for boats, so don’t expect a kilometers-long shopping boulevard here. You will find water, yachts, and plenty of space to walk along the coast. A little further is Flisvos Marina, where you do find restaurants, cafes, and shops. Order a freddo cappuccino there, find a spot with a view of the boats, and try not to calculate what such a yacht costs.

Close to the marina is also the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. This gigantic complex houses the Greek National Opera and the National Library, but we also come for the park and the view. Walk along the canal, rent a bike, or go up for a panoramic view over Athens and the sea. After that, you can still head towards the center, because Marina Kallithea is about a fifteen-minute drive from downtown Athens. Wander through Plaka, drink cocktails in Psiri, and visit the Acropolis. This way, you end the quiet Bieber vacation with a few Greek classics. Because going to Athens without tzatziki, temples, and having walked at least twenty thousand steps? That doesn’t count, of course.

So it’s really not difficult to experience the same vacation as Hailey and Justin. So are you still looking for a last-minute trip? Then you know what to do.
